It does seem too early. But then again Thanksgiving is only a week and a half away. I really don't care when they start it as long as it's there when I'm ready for it.

I can sacrifice the lack of Beach Boy music for a couple of weeks in exchange. Of course, that is an extreme exaggeration since I never turn on Oldies 103 unless it's to hear the Christmas music, and I bet a lot of folks are like me. And, well, who doesn't like to make two weeks of more revenue?

At least they waited until the middle of November. They've been doing this for several years now, and given the increasing amount of "Christmas Creep" this year, I'm surprised that they haven't given in to the temptation to start November 1.

I read online about some radio station that has done just that, with the expectation of running nothing but Christmas music until JANUARY 2ND. Seems to me WODS goes back to regular programming a day or two after Christmas.

The story says Santa and Mrs. Claus were on hand to declare it ‘all Christmas music all the time.’ Then we are told the official name for the "Christmas fest" is the "5th annual Holiday Music Marathon."

Aside from the Adam Sandler classic, how many Hanukkah songs are going to be played in the next 6 weeks? Will there be Ramadan tunes, or maybe a summer solstice chant, or perhaps some Mahashivratri jingles? Why can they bring Santa in but insist that this is a Holiday Music Marathon instead of a Christmas Music Marathon?

Bah, humbug, Oldies 103! A little truth in advertising, if you please.

My Letter From WROR

I wrote to them yesterday, to complain. Here is my letter, followed by their response.

MINE (edited for length):

I love Christmas music - after Thanksgiving. I love the fact that you play it all day and all night - after Thanksgiving. Before Thanksgiving, I don't want to hear it. I will not listen to your station, if you insist on playing Christmas music on November 12th.

Hi,

Thanks for listening to 105.7 WROR and thanks for your comments about our programming.

Here at WROR, we find Christmas fun and worthy of celebrating. With Thanksgiving next week, we thought it we’d get into the spirit now. Led by Loren and Wally, we are all excited to celebrate the season by having some fun and playing Boston’s Favorite Christmas Songs. I’m sorry you don’t agree.

Hopefully, when the spirit touches you, you will join in the fun. Santa will be available to talk to your kids weeknights from 6 to 8.

I appreciate you taking the time to write. We will return to playing Boston’s Greatest Hits on December 26.

Ridiculous reporting

What makes me gag is "reporting" such as "In a live interview, Santa praised the station for its decision to play the holiday music..."

But this is explained by the note at the bottom: "WODS is owned by Infinity Broadcasting, a division of Viacom, which also owns this web site."

It's advertising in the guise of a news story. Unfortunately, this isn't unusual.
