Students, joined by some parents and staffers, staged a brief sit-in on the steps of Boston Latin Academy, which the school department wants to move into the shuttered Hyde Park High School, which would mean the city wouldn't have completely wasted $42 million in renovations made in Hyde Park a couple years back. The BPS plan would then have the Boston Arts Academy, currently in the Fenway, move into the BLA building.
Although Superintendent Carol Johnson has the final say, she has said she wants to wait until after the School Committee discusses the plan. A committee discussion planned for tomorrow night has been postponed until Oct. 24.

While the state legislature and city politicians are busy writing tax write offs for movie corps, insurance co's and gambling enterprises; they've been cutting education funding.
This is all related.

Ironically, I took my SSATs when it was Hyde Park High in November of 1983 and got accepted to Boston Latin Academy in March 1984. At first, I thought it was a great idea for BLA to move to Hyde Park High's old building, but more and more, it's not a good idea.
I say this from experience - I travel to Watertown daily, and even though my building is a stone's throw from Brighton, getting to Watertown requires a minimum of three modes of transportation. Unless the Boston School Committee brings back charter buses, or adds school bus service, Brighton to Hyde Park will be a very long slog.
When I was at the Ipswich St building, the East Boston kids were the ones who faced a long commute, even though they only had to make one connection at Government Center. The Brighton kids took the route 57 bus in and walked down Lansdowne.
I can appreciate the superintendent trying to find a use of the fully reconstructed building, but not for BLA.
Better to stay in the Fenway?

Do you know how the move to Townsend St in Roxbury happened? The former sites in the Fenway are prime real estate now.
