Honey Fitz says get out and vote. In Boston, seven people are running for four at-large council seats and there are contested district races in 2 (South Boston, South End and Chinatown), 3 (Dorchester) and 7 (Roxbury).
In District 3, where O'Toole and Baker and battling to replace outgoing incumbent Feeney, the Dorchester Reporter is tweeting the latest voting numbers and other observations.
In District 2, Lee vs. Linehan, David Bernstein calculates that turnout in precincts Lee won in the preliminary are up dramatically, but that turnout in precincts Linehan won are up even more so.
Our special Election Day Citizen Complaint of the Day comes from Brighton, where a peeved citizen reports:
No "I voted today" stickers at Patricia White Apartments. What's the point of voting? (But despite that, the civilian poll workers and the Boston police officer were all super friendly and professional. Thanks for their community service!)

People are always trying to get greater turnouts at the polls, but every time I go to vote I'm more aggravated than the last time, so its no wonder people don't want to vote.
Not sure if its the same all over the city, but in Southie you can't even get in the door of the polling location without getting accosted by all of the campaigners shoving fliers into your hand or urging you to vote for their guy.
So much for that 150ft rule, although when the fine is "no more than $20", I can see why it's not enforced, and even if it is, its comparable to a casual scratch ticket purchase.
Similar thing in Brookline
When I lived in Brookline, every election day the same ....person.....was inside the polling place being completely obnoxious and campaigning.
I called the police station to complain and was basically told that this.....person...... wasn't doing anything illegal as long as they weren't holding a sign. This pers....piece of shit, had buttons, leaflets, was getting in everyone's path and personal space. But the cops didn't care because she didn't also have a placard on a six foot spike.
I just smile....
... and say "I've made up my mind already". No one bothered me after this.

I always take the electioneering garbage
and then transport it to the proper location. If they want to waste money on this, that's fine, I won't be bothering to look at it, though, as it makes its way to the trash can.
I usually KNOW at least some of the people handing stuff out

I don't throw it away in front of them
I'm accepting what they offer, and letting them think whatever they wish. I just meant that I don't allow it to sway my vote, which is already determined before I get there. I'm thinking now, though, that I'm doing them a disservice. I should probably tell them they are breaking the law, and warn them that law enforcement is on the premises.
Nothing like that at Boston City Hall.
Just a bored looking security guard. And today, the election people are happy to see you because like no one shows up. Its not like there is no contest.

I got one
That's funny - I got an "I voted" sticker for first time ever today in W. Roxbury. Turnout was very low - I was voter 83 at about 11:00.
District 4 has a race, too.
District 4 has a race, too. No real doubt as to who's going to win, but it seems worth it to encourage the democratic process by recognizing the valiant efforts of those for whom the race is undoubtedly lost.

Brookline Selectwoman Jesse Mermell is on the other side of the Muddy River today, working the polls for pal Ayanna Pressley. She reports how she's keeping that energy from waning:

If (IF) Lee draws more support from working folks and Linehan from retirees, there's good reason to think that the turnout numbers will narrow by the time the polls close.

or the old southie "vote more than once using different names" which people have publicly bragged about doing.
Among all the robo-calls today...
...(and there have been too many to remember), the most interesting one was from Rep. Nick Collins, saying that the city is reporting low voter turnout in Southie, and he urged us to get out and vote for Flaherty and Linehan. I'll be curious to see the count at my precinct when I vote on my way home from work.

Did anyone else get a robo-call from an 8 year-old for Ayanna Pressley? I like kids, but it was pretty annoying.
Update from Southie!
Well, in the span of an hour I received three additional calls, all from the Linehan campaign, including a robo-call from a Marine veteran who served in Iraq to support Linehan (he supported the veteran's housing proposal on D Street). I've received zero calls from the Lee's campaign...is Southie turnout really that bad? It will be interesting to see if this push puts Linehan over the line. Now...gotta go VOTE!
Stickers in West Roxbury too!
In all my years of voting at Holy Name, I'd never seen them before. We went at 6pm and there was a steady stream, the counter said 545 I think?
A woman outside also greeted me with a "Hello Neighbor" and asked me to sign something requiring Voter ID. It's her right to ask me, but considering I hear her and her friend on the 51 bus talking about how the Occupy Boston protesters should be sent to Somalia, I had no problem saying no thank you.
