Russell Simmons tours Occupy Boston

Simmons

I only stumbled upon the tail end of his visit, when he'd already put his Yankees cap back on for the trip back to New York and briefly talked to a media throng. When he first arrived, he donned Phoenix writer Chris Faraone's Sox hat.

Meanwhile, lawyers working on behalf of Occupy Boston are seeking a court order to keep Boston from doing to Dewey Square what the NYPD did to the original Occupy campsite overnight.

...one of the top 1% ???

I love how these Hollywood big shots pledge solidarity...and then its back to the private jet, the yacht, the crib in Belize, the cream-colored Bentleys...

No one is against capitalism.

Are you implying that no one can be a millionaire and want a level playing field and having their taxes raised? That not hypocritical, and no one is arguing they shouldn't be able to be milionairs with hard work.

Stop drinking the talking point koolaide pal. Or are we going to go to the infantile argument that they can always write a check to the Fed or IRS?

Isn't he one of the top 1% ???

I'm sure he was quoting from his recent book, "Super Rich: A Guide to Having it all"

Here's an excerpt from Amazon's publisher description.

True wealth has more to do with what's in your heart than what's in your wallet. Using this knowledge, Simmons became one of America's shrewdest entrepreneurs, achieving a level of success that most investors only dream about. No matter how much material gain he accumulated, he never stopped lending a hand to those less fortunate.

How about having Oprah come speak next week?

Seems to me that no one who knows anything about Simmons is going to think he normally walks around with a Red Sox hat - his Yankees cap is almost a signature item. So putting a Bosox one on for an 'official' trip to Boston seems more like a respectful donning of local attire than anything else. (I have to admit, even as a hyper-rational nerd, I get a hair up when I see someone wearing a Yankees cap in "my" Boston.)

Now if he had pretended to be a Bosox fan (like some politicians have in the past) - imo that would have crossed the line into carpetbagging. And maybe he should have just skipped a hat altogether - but the dude is bald, and you almost never see him without a hat - I'd guess like many of us middle age guys, he really doesn't like to have it showing.

But anon, if you're set on hating him, I'm betting nothing he wears is going to change your mind.

Actually the Occupiers have received marching orders (yuk yuk) for another toodle down to the North Washington Street Bridge on Thursday. Last time they tried that a bunch of them got arrested later on, because of the campsite expansion thing, ostensibly. Some of the more ... uhm.. skeptical? folks on this list suggested it was due to hiz honuh da mayuh's famously thin skin and the fact that the bridge in question is not the responsibility of the Feds or the State but of the municipality. Given that this is also part of the Obama '12 campaign, the question would be how far does Menino's support for the Commander-in-Chief go? Far enough to take some infrastructure criticism? Just lay back and think of England...or Louise Day Hicks...on second thought....erp.

an American taxpayer...yet he is complaining about how taxes are collected and spent?

an American citizen...yet he is complaining about the state of our democracy?

a successful businessman...yet he is complaining about the inequities in opportunity and wealth faced by those who are less fortunate?

a human being...yet he is complaining about how humans treat other humans?

I mean, where does he get off, using his resources to visibly advocate and support causes he believes in? Doesn't he know rich people should just wallow in hedonistic excess, and manipulate national discourse and government through secret and untraceable corporate shills? Sheesh, some people have no respect for the ways things are done!

So the occupiers are wrong to protest if they don't have jobs and wrong if they do?

IF you listened to his whole talk (sounds like you are more of a 'decider' than that though, you'd understand his full perspective.
