Roslindale to lose only Thai restaurant, but to gain first West African restaurant

Soon to be ex-Thai restaurant.Soon to be ex-Thai restaurant.

Boston Restaurant Talk reports Bangkok Cafe on Poplar Street is being replaced by Suya Joint, which promises "unique, Nigerian recipes." It may be the city's only Nigerian restaurant following the closing of African Cuisine in Hyde Park earlier this year.

Bangkok Cafe never seemed to achieve critical mass in Roslindale, even after expanding its menu to include Korean and Japanese dishes.

Roslindale Thai fans will have to make their way to Asian Thai Cuisine on River Street in Hyde Park or Thai Spice, Phuket or Sticky Rice in West Roxbury.

but the past several times I've tried to order from there, they didn't answer the phone, in spite of the calls being within the posted hours and operation days. That's never a good sign. Oh well, Sticky Rice is very good, and the guy who runs it is probably one of the coolest people I've ever met.

And the food's good, too. Good combination.

Everything I've had from Sticky Rice has been excellent.

Glad to hear it's a good place. Just moved to West Roxbury from Rozzie Square. I miss Rozzie quite a bit, but have a new place to explore. Thanks!

The neighborhoods are so close and so intertwined. It's not like you have to abandon Roslindale living in West Roxbury.

Owner told me he's actively looking for a place in JP, as takeout/delivery to Rosi and JP make up >80% of his business.

I don't mind that too much, as its pretty much the same distance for me.

p.s. we loved Bangkok Cafe too - sorry to see it go. One problem with that part of the square is the lack of much evening-hours business activity. That means much less walk-by traffic. I think if the same restaurant was located around the corner, on the Corinth Street stretch, it would have made out much better.

I can well recall going to hip places like Cambridge as the only option for Ethiopian food.

About once a year, the Globe or Chronicle or somebody does a piece on how cool Roslindale's becoming. We've been becoming cool for more than a decade now. I'm freezing already.

I've been dying for some fresh grilled lorem ipsum.

Was wondering if they were really planning on serving giraffe.

for text yet to be written. Obviously, I found the menu rather confusing.

Hi there! I am the co-owner and executive chef of Suya Joint, which will soon be coming to Roslindale. I see that our website has created a stir, which is exciting for us. So, don't worry, we won't be serving "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet." We also won't be serving giraffe. For anyone who was thinking that because our logo includes a giraffe, we are preparing giraffe for food - don't worry; we're not. The giraffe is a regal animal with a gentle spirit and represents the African culture. It's used in our logo to convey our African roots. What we will be serving is authentic African cuisine to include suya, meat pies and other delicacies. We are thrilled to bring an African dining experience to the area. Stay tuned for more info as we get closer to the opening of Suya Joint!

Bangkok Cafe's food but we mostly ordered takeout. I think I have only eaten in the actual restaurant once and wonder if that's part of the problem. Hope the next place has better luck.

For those willing to drive 15-20 minutes or spend an evening on the 34E, the best Thai restaurant around is the Thai Thani on Washington Street in Norwood. This is the one and only culinary area where I found moving to Roslindale let me down. The West Roxbury places are OK; I've tried Sticky Rice and Phuket, but I was disappointed after walking to Bangkok Thai and wishing I could justify the trip out to Norwood instead.
