Ma Glockner's is gone, but its chicken lives on

On a random road trip yesterday, we ended up in Woonsocket, RI (OK, so, yeah, pretty random). It was getting late, we hadn't gotten lunch and we stumbled on a place called River Falls. Looked like your basic burger-and-steaks-in-an-old-mill restaurant. But then the waitress started to tell us their Sunday special was Ma Glockner's, but she couldn't finish because I basically yelled "berched chicken!" which kind of startled her because people don't generally yell out the day's specials.

Yes, the chicken steamed for several hours is back, and, yes, it's served with a fresh cinnamon bun, just like they did at the old Bellingham place that closed a few years back (also with fries and a salad). But they only serve it on Sundays.

Have never heard of it!

It's very, very soft. Nice spices, too, but by themselves not unique.

...and didn't get a New York system hot dog? ;-)

Another good thing in Woonsocket - Chan's for music. Lots of good blues acts. Skip the food.

But only after coming out of the restaurant, and by then we were stuffed :-).

First off, they're weiners. :p Secondly, everyone knows the only real New York System is in Olneyville. Even the other locations of the same shop aren't the same. New York Lunch is for those poseur quebecois up in Woon-e-so-quette. Throw me down the stairs my lunch, mama.

According to the menu, they do.

The full experience requires knotty pine paneling and waiters who take your drink orders and come back to slam your salad in front of you because there's only one menu item.

But the walls are all exposed stone and cement from when the place was a factory or something. And our waitress was very nice, didn't slam anything.

Looks like I have a Sunday road trip in my future.

I miss Woonsocket*. Broaster House Chicken is where my family went.

I love knowing that the recipe continues. My mother always wanted me to take her to Bellingham when she could no longer drive. I may have to go for old times sake.

Cinnamon was one spice she used in flavoring the crispy skin. Story goes that one day Ma Glockner served the men working on the road in front of her house some of her home made chicken. It was so delicious, the workers called her "Ma" and the family restaurant grew from there.

Sounds pretty cool. Love these old-school types of places. Looks like it used to be a pretty huge restaurant.

Right across the square is another great old school favorite of mine, Ye Olde English - best Fish-n-Chips anywhere.
