Police: Greenway shooting victim died in gunfight; shooter likely fired in self defense

An argument between two groups ended in a gunfight that left one of the shooters dead early Sunday, Boston Police report.

Although the fatal shooting of Dumayne Chin, 25, found at Atlantic and High, remains under investigation, "it appears (the man who fired the fatal shot) may have acted in self-defense and he has not been charged at this time," police say in a statement:

Preliminary results of the investigation appear to suggest that members of two groups became involved in a verbal altercation which led to shots being fired by two individuals. ... Mr. Chin sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at Tufts Medical Center. The second individual, a 33-year-old male, possessed a registered firearm and a valid license to carry it. That individual has surrendered his firearm to police, given a full statement and has fully cooperated with the investigation thus far.

The entire case will end up before a grand jury, the police and the DA's office report.

wonder if the shooter was some sort of security guard for one of the hotels in the area considering he had a license to carry a concealed weapon and was in that area at 2:30am.

Was Mr. Chin's legal too?

Odds are pretty slim - it's VERY hard to get a LTC in Mass.

The NRA will probably enter this into their database of stories where someone with a LTC fended off an attack. Probably happens a few hundred times a year. Unfortunately some 25,000 plus Americans are killed by guns every year (2/3 self inflicted) and thousands more hurt themselves. However, the PR machine that is the NRA will use this as fodder for why every man woman and child in this country should constantly have an arsenal at the ready.

Very sad state of affairs.

It's sad that he was able to defend himself legally? Seems like a strange observation.

No, it's not sad that he defended himself, it's lucky.

What's sad is that the NRA will take that luck and act like it is representative of how every gun fight comes out, with the LTC registered gun owner the winner. What's sad is that guns are so readily available that the assailant had one even though he had an intent to use it offensively and not defensively. What's sad is that anonymous assholes like you will attack people like Stevil who point out that distortion of this event will be the norm for completely political purposes...thus proving his point.

Note that cities with the strictest gun control laws typically have the highest murder rates.

Please also note that the percentage of gun ownership has gone up dramatically in the past 20 years, yet crime has continued to plummet.

Also interestingly the number one demographic buyer of firearms in the past decade has been single women.

care to link to that storybook Clint?

Top 20 states with highest gun fatalities per capita. Further correlation and causation; they have strict gun control laws because of their problems with gun deaths, not in spite of those rules. Boston is very strict on gun control, yet one of the safest metropolitan districts in the nation (even with this uptick). Are you implying Boston is the best model for the nation? Or that Boston is safer because of gun control?

Gun ownership has been dropping drastically for 20 years. Number of guns per owner has been increasing.

No question there, you're right.

Let's be truthful with the facts.

More guns being manufactures and more guns checks being processed is true, but you didn't say that.

Gun ownership per capita has gone down at the same time that people with guns have been buying more arms.

Less people owning guns overall, but more guns for those that do own and collect.

They also have far different issues than we face here in Boston. Arizona has large numbers of people crossing its border with Mexico, and those crossing over have even killed US officials on this side of the border. The dailybeast link doesn't talk about the people who were killed, and what they were doing. If you get someone who is doing something wrong, and happens to have a high powered weapon, as in the linked article here:
http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/ticket/fighting-drugs-...
then they might be far too willing to start firing at law enforcement personnel.

There have also been similar problems and fears in Oklahoma:
http://abcnews.go.com/Blotter/travel-warning-mexic...

There was also a rancher who was killed (I think on his own property), by presumed drug smugglers:
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?story...

No sane person wants to go out and shoot someone, but if you end up in this type of situation, do you really want to just sit there and take a bullet? Sure, you can try and run, those bullets travel mighty fast though.

That's exactly what I was saying. It's sad that so many Americans get killed by guns - not that the guy defended himself. What a moron - and so far at least 6 other morons gave him a plus for that comment - looks like the NRA is even out here trying to get in their whacks!

Can you imagine if everyone at that fight had a gun - would have been shootout at the Greenway Corral.

This is blocked at work, but I am sure they are trumpeting the benefit of LTC.

Considering this location and the apparent length of the encounter, at least some of this will be on surveillance cameras I would think.

All of it was recorded on the hotel securiry cameras
Witnesses said there were many round fired.
Don't forget that the gunman who may have acted in self defense has a registered weapon and a license to carry it. This kind of government regulation of firearms is what the NRA is opposed to.

Blazing away in public is just plain crazy. I like guns and all, but damn, this is not good.

I suppose if all the gangbangers had a LTC, that would make all the gun violence in the city OK? After all, my neighborhood of Dorchester is an armed society, so it follows that it's a polite society, right? The legality of the weapon is not the point. Are the cops just assuming the guy who had the LTC and stayed to give a statement must have fired back in self-defense, or is there evidence or are there objective witnesses to back his story up? In any case, I still maintain that people who feel the need to keep a gun on them at all times are more likely to find trouble, because either consciously or subconsciously they seek it out, thinking the gun will save them in a situation that would have been avoided by someone with no gun but more wisdom - situations like the inevitable fights that break out during these booze cruises and within those more disreputable Tremont Street nightclubs that keep popping up in the news.

Its not about the guns. Its about freedom and spontaneous order. Most people want what is best for themselves and not to harm others. Fact is that for one reason or another, society is degraded. As for Dorchester and guns, the more moral people with an equalizer in force to confront the kids acting as gangsters with malicious intentions the better. Police can not stop nor prevent crime. Its the people who must regulate their own lives. If violence exists, the root of that problem must be identified, evaluated, and effectively remedied for the mutual benefit of the community. Idealistic, maybe. But I trust that from the white collar family, to the blue collar family, to the welfare family - they all just want to live a prosperous life and be happy. For what its worth, My rant. God Bless; and may that deceased individual sentient being make peace with his soul in eternity.

Can't let that slide.

Both in MA and nationally, crime is at historic lows. Even with small upticks caused by the great recession. Your parents and grandparents lived in a much more lawless and less safe environment that you do, period.

This nostalgia for the Hollywood version of the 1950's is detrimental, because it's not real. And it leads us to wasting a lot of money on threats that are statistically irrelevant.

Now, that doesn't mean we should not strive to do better. But hyperbole and hysteria is counter to whats needed.

Grandma was giving BJ's in the back of Chevys, Guys were picking on the ethnicity of the week, and god knows what was going on in Southie.
