Yay! They're getting closer to the tourists :( ...I guess I'm showing my naivete by asking if there was ever a time when the Public Garden was locked at night? Sounds like it's getting as bad as the Common.
Locking the Public Garden
I only once ever found the Public Garden locked, and that was during a First Night celebration before and during the early (7 pm) fireworks on the adjoining Common. In later years they have not locked it.

Well, just so no one gets the wrong idea from your comment, the Boston Common is not locked at night.

Yes I do, I'm one of them. But there are also many tourists there, and new students as well, especially around Labor Day weekend. Of course, it's terrible if anyone is a victim of a crime, but reports of violence around areas frequented by visitors is apt to cause those visitors to stay away from those areas, which is a pity, because on the whole they are very safe and pleasant, as we locals know.

Most pageviews on the site are by repeat visitors (over the past month, 66.64% of visits were by repeats visitors, according to Google Analytics). And most of those visitors are from either Boston or immediate suburbs (I'm too lazy to tally up all the "cities" into which Google splits us - such as Roslindale and Allston - to get an exact number, but it's high).
You don't need to post this on every single story involving gunshots, especially in a city whose mayor is one of the heads of that coalition

Wow that's disappointing--no question the editorial prerogative for a private blog preempts the first amendment and it could be decided for the sake of keeping things civil to edit certain posts, but this makes things looks like a couple of frequent posters who strongly disagree with hello kitty have strong armed the editor into censoring content that, for all intents and purposes, does become a part of the historical record.
Those 33.36% who aren't repeat visitors must be coming from somewhere else? These posts do show up on searches.
Plus I was sort of looking forward to the NRA faction's explosive response to the next hello kitty, or would they have learned enough to just let sleeping kitties lie?

The 1st Amendment applies to the gov't not to private individuals. For instance, if you decide to turn-off a tv talk show because you don't like what they are saying you are not violating any protection the tv commentator has under the 1st amendment. Also, the 1st amendment also doen't require you to read books that you do not like.

Thanks for the civics lesson, you are right I mistyped--should have said freedom of speech, which while commonly invoked in cases of venting in a newspaper, doesn't really apply from a constitutional perspective as you so astutely pointed out. Everyone agress that hello kitty can say what she wants on the courthouse steps, but Adam doesn't have to print it.
Now explain that part about the books to me real slow w/ small words please?

The only thing more surprising than that infallible piece of logic is that Uhub readers stand by and write you a blank check for saying things like that. I suppose a grand piano dropped by some cartoon movers from the fifth floor that crushes the bad guy just as he's about to pull the trigger on me could save my life also...
Everyone assumes that the issue being discussed is responsible gun ownership, now where does a statement like that come in? Please explain.
And no Adam this is not a trolling expedition; I really am trying to understand how having more illegal guns in my neck of the woods will make me feel safer. I actually feel much better when I read about C-11, Safe Streets, and Youth Violence units taking guns off the streets, even if it's one by one.

It was a trolling response to a trolling post.
Although if I (Pete nice, a responsible gun owner) had an illegal gun, we actually would be safer. Me, you, an everyone. But that's because I am responsible, know how to use firearms, and would keep that illegal firearm away from everyone else. Our roads would also be safer if everyone drove like me, but that logic doesn't really hold up either.
I don't think we as a nation are responsible enough to carry firearms, so you (and anonymous) are correct. Illegal guns are bad (as are Molotov cocktails, boiling water, sharp knives, and other items that people can use to hurt others.)
I was just annoyed by the post, and wanted to counter that post by spreading information to everyone else, since the NRA actually has a lot of good things on their site as well (gun safety, courses, etc).
But yes, I was using a sarcastic trolling technique to counter spam.

Want to help?
Get a gun license, buy as many guns you can afford, then donate them to your police department to be destroyed. It will do a lot more than fighting the political machine (for now at least)

The problem is the same whether it happens in the public garden or my neighborhood or misterbricks.

[/float]Most of these crimes of gun violence are perpetrated with illegal guns, which is to say guns not registered and used by people without licenses.
There are measure that can be taken to reduce the number of illegal guns on the street.
You know what's a problem for me?

Most people would have honored the request of the person who allows us to voice our opinions on their website. Not you, though. Like most morons with a cause, you feel by annoying the 67% of us who read this site on a daily basis, you're striking a blow against an epidemic of violence. Only you're not.
You're a classic example of someone who has limited imagination and who clearly now relishes the enmity you've engendered amongst the U-Hub community. How empty your life must be.
When does gun violence become personal?
I think you're on to something.
The problem of gun violence strikes fear in one's heart when you realize it could have been you.
If you never go to the places gun violence occurs, you can convince yourself you're prudent to stay out of "bad neighborhoods".
But when gun violence occurs in a place you've been to and are likely to go to again the idea that it could have been you begins to creep in.
