No, that isn't a coyote on the lawn in front of the VA Hospital in West Roxbury

We were headed south on the VFW Parkway the other day when, whoa, was that a coyote hanging out by the VA Hospital? We did a quick uey, pulled into the parking lot and discovered that, no, it was not a real coyote, just a plastic replica of one. Hokay.

AlertNewEngland tweets the idea is to try to scare geese away - like those fake owls you can get to scare pigeons off your roof. Lin Dolin tweets the fauxyotes work just as well as the bogus owls - geese may be stupid, but they're not that stupid:
There was one where used to work. Geese quickly figured it was fake.

Saw a coyote in the Arboretum
Saw a coyote in the Arboretum around 5:00 yesterday, strolling around without a care while folks watched and took photos less than 50 yards away. I live in the area and this is the first time I've seen one out during the day, seemingly not too concerned about lots of people and dogs about.

It was in the grassy area
It was in the grassy area along the main paved path between the Bussey and South Street entrances. I saw a pup that was hit by a car right outside the Bussey entrance back in June, probably a brother to this one.
Coyote pup now dead
sad ending, I believe I passed it in the right hand lane of Centre Street on the side opposite the Faulkner Hosp. Didn't go back to make a positive ID so I can't state with certainty that it was not a a domestic dog. But I am pretty certain. This was about 820 pm.

BHCC used to have theses. It looked like it worked for a while then stopped. Better than people who want to poison the geese/swans.
My High School
Had silhouette dogs that swayed in the breeze like a lawn ornament. Geese weren't smart enough to figure that out.
I have one of those owl statues
I have one of those owl statues to keep birds off my back porch. It doesn't work.
Using the fake
Only works when the dummy gets moved around. Birds quickly realize the figure is fake when it never moves. They should get some of those mechanical figures I saw on "How it's Made" the figures are remote controlled and the head and tail move. Then someone from facilities management who sees geese on the lawn can move the head. Geese see the motion and take off. Just the single poor quality standing figure is useless. I wonder if they also use scent marking to convince the geese to move on.
