State officials bubbling over new water fountain

The state Department of Conservation and Recreation and New Balance are holding a formal unveiling on Saturday morning - for a water bubbler in Artesani Park off Soldiers Field Road in Brighton:

New Balance and the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) are taking their commitment to outdoor enthusiasts to a new level. Together, they will unveil a brand-new water bubbler at Artesani Playground. The new bubbler will operate all year long to keep outdoor enthusiasts hydrated along the popular Charles River paths. The bubbler features heights adequate for thirsty adults, children, and even pets! Join us for this exciting installation.

DCR is also installing new bubblers for Hatch Memorial Shell on the Esplanade, Jackson Square Playground on the Southwest Corridor and Pope John Paul II Park in Dorchester.

I mean, how "exciting" can a grand opening/unveiling/installation for a water bubbler be? While it's nice there will be bubblers installed by the DCR, I guess the good thing is it won't have Menino's name on a plaque.

It's truly sad how we've become so ignorant (or uncaring) that we continue to hand the marketing types yet more excuses to shill their c*&p on us.

This is great actually. But my main gripe with the DCR is that they seem to focus on whatever big projects that are focused on while leaving the little stuff to stagnate. There is a bridge over the Mystic River in Arlington that was hit and damaged by a cab 3 years ago. There's still a chunk missing and yellow caution tape on it. Also all the bridges on the river are completely defaced with grafitti (Note to urban "art" lovers, this is just lame tags). Meanwhile there's an amazing path along Route 16 they just built and it looks amazing. Good on them for the new stuff, but they need to work on maintaining what they have better as well.

All depends on grants

The Alewife Restoration Greenway Path (Restoration because all the trees and animal habitat they cut down wasn't there 75 years ago) got funded with an Obama stimulus grant. Fixing stuff comes out of regular budgets that can't keep up with all the projects built with grants. The bridge probably has to wait for a grant to re-do the bridge completely. DCR is too busy making new bike paths to fix anything.

It is about time. They have had them forever on Wollaston Beach in Quincy. It will make life so much easier when it is hot out and you run out of water/Gatorade.

This is a treacherous time of year for distance runners. It can get hot enough during the day where you need more water than you can reasonably carry, but cold enough at night that DCR or the city won't turn the fountains on, for fear of freezing pipes.
