The FBI says it is looking for two men in connection with the deadly bombs planted along the Marathon route on Boylston Street: One in a white cap, one in a dark cap. The man in the white cap was last seen heading outbound on Boylston.
Both are to be considered "armed and dangerous," the FBI says.

Several commenters on the type of bomb employed have stated that they should have weighed somewhere about twenty pounds. I have a cat, and on a regular basis, I lift up and move twenty-pound bags of litter from the shelves to the shopping cart. I can't imagine anybody sauntering around with the load like that.

I think for someone in decent shape, perhaps someone who had trained to carry around a dense 20-pound load slung in a backpack, it would not be a huge burden.
I can't say that these photos are very helpful, but maybe someone will scroll through his or her own photos and discover that they have a sharp image of one of these people.

The soldiers that ran (walked quickly) the marathon were wearing 40 lb rucksacks. Put them at the finish just in time to tear down the snow fencing. Carlos Arredondo was there to support them. They ran to support fallen soldiers.

I carried my kids around on my back until they were 40 lbs, plus 5 lbs of Tough Traveller. I also used to carry a twelve pound laptop and charger combo with my dissertation paper stuff on a regular basis. I was just hauling around a 20+ pound courier bag through two large airports.
Women in some developing countries work with their 20lb kids on their backs.
Can't say that I can do that daily now, but it isn't anything excessive if you are used to it.

A quick google search yielded this about middle schoolers' backpacks:
We're sending 6th graders to school carrying approximately the same amount of weight. If a 6th grader can do it, a slim guy in his 20s can do it, especially if the backpack is designed well and distributes the weight evenly.

By my estimation, that's about 2 12-packs of soda, which I routinely load into a backpack and walk home from the store with. Its heavy, to be sure, but once its on your back its not an unreasonable burden. And that's as someone with a bad back. It might be a touch awkward to get on and off, but I think it fair to assume that getting it on could be done privately and with just a minimum of concentration, I'm sure it could be taken off the back fairly gracefully.

I bike with a backpack every day, and 20 lbs isn't much of a burden if you've got the straps adjusted right. Kitty litter is tough to carry because it's not very dense, but more dense things are easier to carry. Throw about 4 regular-sized bricks in a backpack, and that's about 20 lbs. If you're in decent shape, you can walk around all day with it. You'll feel relieved when you take it off, but it's not a huge burden.

I think the FBI doesn't really expect to nab them from these photos. These photos provide a frame of reference for the gazillion photos and vids taken at the right time and place. Two guys from a local burrio joint (don't want to throw them under the bus) just chased down a guy with a big backpack wearing a black hat down to Mass Ave and Newbury. Couple punches thrown. Three blacked out SUVs came out SUVs appeared out of nowhere and took over. I'm guessing its a shoplifting related thing, but still surprised at the near instantaneous response out of nowhere by the police.

The NY Times editor's "distorted pixels" are just JPEG compression artifacts, which you expect to be greatest at high contrast boundaries. The suspect's hat happens to have among the sharpest contrast boundaries in the image but there are plenty of "distorted pixels" around the "MIT" on the guy in the foreground's sweatshirt or the white on the fire alarm too.

someone pointed out is that law enforcement has been taking fingerprints and digital photos of foreign nationals that entry the country for the better part of a decade. That they have clear photos and don't have matches to that database leans towards someone already here or a citizen.
Not terribly helpful, but it does probably narrow down the laundry lists of groups on the radar.
