The first mayoral race this year
By adamg on Sun, 05/19/2013 - 11:41am
Peter Gelzinis explains why first we'll see a race to sew up geographical areas (West Roxbury/Hyde Park/JP vs. Dorchester) and the "progressive minority vote," then, after the preliminary shrinks a field of 10 or 12 down to 2, we can get down to actual issues. Also, Gareth Saunders needs to consider whether he wants to join Althea Garrison and Roy Owens in the League of Perpetual Candidates.

West Roxbury/Hyde Park/JP?
Isn't there a neighborhood somewhere in between these three?
You mean Jamaica Plain's
You mean Jamaica Plain's downscale shopping district?
That's the one!
I mean, I live here, but it's just so... unnameable.
The "Parkway"
As always, Roslindale, which has seen up and coming changes (improvements for some), is forgotten. Yet if one were to believe the TV show "Chronicle" it is THE place to be in Boston right now, having been featured multiple times in the last 12 months.
Roslindale was also to be cut up in a way that would have rivaled the logic of King Solomon in the city redistricting battle. Indeed, a small section did cede to Mattapan's City Council District 4 much to the irritation of the impacted residents. But then, Rossie is already cut up odd for the rest of the city council districts, police department, fire department, state reps, ad nauseum. You really need a score card and a decent and current map.
And lest we not forget that until recent years, there was no Roslindale-oriented local newspaper. Instead, Roslindale was lumped in with some rather ambiguous area known as the "Parkway District." How many remember the "Parkway Transcript?"
Of course with Gatehouse Media having problems and closing production plants (and laying off loads of people I understand - if you read Dan Kennedy's blog), there is every likelihood that Rossie will soon be be lumped in with the news from Paddocks Island and the daily Loon Report.
Other than that, I clearly have no opinion...
:-)
The Parkway Transcript
The Parkway Transcript started publishing in 1939, including under the name Roslindale Parkway Transcript. People from Roslindale who bought it weekly for decades had no problem dealing with the name. That might be because much of the border between the two districts was and is invisible, and the rest is... the Parkway.
Time to elect the first
Time to elect the first qualified women to this office, Charlotte Richie. She should send the boys packing.
