Hell's bells: Subway can open early, well, early-ish, in Southie
By adamg on Fri, 08/02/2013 - 2:07pm
The Boston Licensing Board this week approved a request from a new Subway at 11 W. Broadway to open at 7 a.m., rejecting complaints from the neighborhood about the potential liabilities of methadone patrons loitering there, as opposed to in front of the Dunkin' Donuts across the street, which already opens at 5 a.m.
This is the second time in a little more than a month that the board has rejected the presence of users of a nearby methadone clinic as a reason to keep a restaurant from opening early in the morning. In June, the board voted to let a McDonald's open at 5 a.m. on Harvard Avenue in Allston.

Miracle
Am I dreaming? or did the board actually do something that didn't hinder business? AND rejected claims by community groups?!?!?
*looks out window for fire and brimstone*
New residents
down the Lower End have no clout. The floodgates are open.
New residents will likely patronize this Subway
if it's convenient for them and well-run, which it should be.
Patronize?
Why were there "complaints from the neighborhood"? And the new neighbors will NOT patronize them unless Subway now makes artisan sandwiches.
How many meth clinics are
How many meth clinics are there in Boston? Or is this just a side of life I'm not familiar enough to know about?
Mass Ave from DOT to Shouthie
is referred to as Methadone Mile!
What?
No part of Mass. Ave. goes to, or even near, South Boston.
Don't forget the clinics on
Don't forget the clinics on Topeka St (off Southampton St) and Frontage Rd (next to the BTD tow lot).
Subway
I don't understand the reluctance by the city to allow this business an early opening time. It is a very busy area. Day and night. The presence of the 'methadonians' is a major problem. Instead of penalizing a businessman for trying to succeed. Perhaps the city should concentrate on dealing with the loitering and drug activity. It's a problem throughout the neighborhood.
