Done deal: Forry to host St. Patrick's Day breakfast
Good news, everyone! State Sen. Linda Dorcena Forry and City Councilor Bill Linehan issued a statement tonight agreeing that she will host the St. Patrick's Day breakfast and that they will now get back to the task of dealing with public safety, substance abuse and neighborhood development.
In the statement, Forry says:
It is evident there has been miscommunication surrounding this event. I am happy to say that Councilor Bill Linehan and I have met and we agree with the dean of the South Boston delegation Congressman Stephen Lynch, that the St. Patrick's Day breakfast is hosted by the sitting State Senator of the 1st Suffolk District. I look forward to the South Boston delegation playing a major role in the event as they have done in the past.
For his part, Linehan says:
I look forward to working with Senator Forry on presenting the St. Patrick's Day Breakfast next year. Linda and I have had a long standing working relationship. I am confident that we can present a quality event that makes us all proud. We have much more important issues to address facing the community which we both represent and serve.
Forry then jumps back in to say that in the coming months, she and other members of the "South Boston delegation" will discuss "the various ways that we can collectively make next year's St. Patrick's Day breakfast a success.
I want my constituents to know that we are focusing on pressing issues, such as public safety, substance abuse and neighborhood development.”

What's next?
Da fuckin' gays?
Yes
Yes.
No
Absolutely not
Well, John Ciccone did say
He was a lurker on these pages. I bet he likes his gays on TV only. That Sean Hayes, he seems to know his place.
Hmmm...
Racism? Sexism? Parochialism? The old boys' club? A mixture of all four, in my opinion. I will tell you that the article in The Boston Globe doesn't paint a good picture of either Nick Collins or Bill Linehan.
It's a parochial event. There
It's a parochial event. There is no reason it shouldn't be parochial. It's not racism to limit an Irish cultural event to one of Irish descent.
It's a political event.
How do you not see that it's a political event?! It's filled with politicians. Oh that's right, you're an anon.
That it is a political event
That it is a political event on a day celebrating a particular heritage makes no difference. There are black political events. There are latino politcal events. There are LGBT political events. Why must this cultural/political event be so inclusive that the emcee needs to be treated in a blind fashion? No one is suggested non-Irish be barred from the event, only that the emcee be of Irish decent. Why is that such an outrageous thing?
Because Irishness was never a condition before
The condition dating back decades was that the emcee be the sitting state senator for South Boston. That previous emcees were Irish was beside the point. Hey, your rules.
No. The sitting state senator
No. The sitting state senator happened to be Irish, which is no longer the case. We can't be the only ones doing such events on St. Patrick's Day. Show me anywhere else where they have a non-Irish emcee.
I think that people would have a much different opinion if the favored PC emcee was not black. Italian emcee of the St. Patrick's Day breakfast? Absurd!
Is there no celebration in Forrys Irish children?
That her family is a mix of black and Irish? No of course not because you old racists don't want any mixing going down.
Forry is more Irish than most of the biggots in Southie
She's been to Ireland 4 times, has 4 Irish kids, is a practicing Catholic, lives in a hugely Irish neighborhood, consistely supports Irish Immigration Center, Irish Pastoral Center and other organizations that help Irish immigrants (and many others) and is married to a prominent Irish American.
Southie is a shameful portrayal of what's NOT Irish but pretends to be, close-mindedness and chronyism.
The St Patricks Day Breakfast should be moved to Florian Hall.
I agree! The woman knows more
I agree! The woman knows more about what being Irish really is, as opposed to all those phoneys and hate mongers who pretend to be Irish.
All the Irish moved
from Southie, just Yuppies who wish they were Irish and those Yuppies who think Murphy's Law is an Irish
bar.
Both will be gone soon....
Suzanne Lee will beat Linnehan in a few weeks and Collin's insane endorsement of Connelly (statedly because he wants to end bussing) will be the end of him next year, as the endorsement is a slap in the face to Marty Walsh, who got Collins everything he's got.
Senator Forry has class
In the latest installment of "GUESS WHO'S COMING TO DINNER" Linda wins by knockout. Nick Collins and Linehan in a matter of hours have managed to alienate gays, black, women, and according to the Dorchester Reporter hundreds of southie supporters of Marty Walsh. These two clowns need Linda to come to the breakfast because no one else will sit with them.
Senator Forry; Sounds like a refreshing change
for the St. Patrick's Day Breakfast. It sounds as if Nick Collins and Linehan need to learn a lesson, if one gets the drift.
Do you feel this also
Do you feel this also alienates people?

Great movie, even better song:

On the one hand I get the
On the one hand I get the need to be inclusive. However, everyone else seems to get to do their own thing at their cultural events. But St. Patrick's Day? Everyone is Irish on St. Patrick's Day! Or some shit like that.
No one says anything so silly about Cinco de Mayo or Pride Fest. Cinco de Mayo beaing led by a WASP? Pride Fest being led by a straight white male? Would never happen and no one would ever suggest it should.
Not so.
Do you know who the grand Marshall of the 2013 Boston Pride parade was? I'm going to say no....
It was none other than Tom Menino.
I'm guessing it was an
I'm guessing it was an honorific thing since he's not going to be Mayor anymore. Did he do it in any past years? Or is the grand marshall some political whoever with no Irish heritage?
I'll go on record as saying the grand marshall should be of Irish heritage and having Menino do it in 2013 was a mistake.
Pride Parade. The
Pride Parade. The implication was that Menino led it even though he isn't gay.
Too bad politics has to
Too bad politics has to contaminate everything. Saint Patrick's day was supposed to be in honor of the patron saint of Ireland ,where sons and daughters of Erin celebrate their culture and remember their humble beginnings. And now , having emigrating from the Emerald Isle, to an America that welcomed their willingness to work hard, starting at the bottom and then working their way up, many bringing their picks and shovels off the home farm to dig the streets of Boston, this event of celebration of their good fortune, has become a jamboree of some sort. Can't we just sit down and enjoy a pint by ourselves?
Ever hear of Irish need not
Ever hear of Irish need not apply? Like other immigrants, Irish were not welcomed.
It's true. The Irish had to
It's true. The Irish had to become white.

Well , fortunately , we came
Well , fortunately , we came later, to a kinder America , where the streets needed our shovels . Dia is Muire duit !
St Patrick was NOT Irish
...just something to think about. He was British and Italian.
Made up holidays
There is also convincing evidence that Columbus was not Italian, but, in fact, Greek. In any case he sailed under the sponsorship and flag of Spain, not Italy. I have to wonder about these American "ethnic" holidays. In Ireland, St. Patrick's Day is a solemn religious day that couldn't be further removed from what goes on in South Boston on that day. Italy never heard of Columbus Day, and, as pointed out, he sailed for Spain. Except for maybe regionally in the Peubla, Mexico does not celebrate Cinco de Mayo. But hey, I guess any excuse for a party.
Columbus Day
I'm still trying to figure out how it got to be a national sort of holiday. It only seems important in cities with a substantial Italian-American community. I never knew it was a "day off of school" sort of holiday until I moved East for college.
The mafia. Think of all those
The mafia. Think of all those politicians they carried around in their pocket, like so many nickels and dimes.
And yet the patron saint of
And yet the patron saint of neither of those two countries and only one in particular.
If you want
To enjoy a pint with your country folk, feel free. In the meantime, we're celebrate inclusiveness in the melting pot.
But that was the idea of it
But that was the idea of it ,you can have your own' melting pot' party .

Wanna really have some fun?
She should host it at the Irish Pastoral Center or associated St. Brendan's parish church on Gallivan near the expressway.
No idea if either of those buildings have enough room/facilities to host, but I just like the idea of finding a heavily Irish location outside of Southie where they don't get to refuse again without looking like it has nothing to do with being Irish and everything to do with it being Dorchester instead of Southie.
+10
Kaz, nothing cements power like exercising the power you've won.
And talk about driving a stake in the heart of the vampire symbolized by Southie's Old Colony public housing's two lists; one for black people and the other, the 'operative' list, which was for whites only.
Would it cost Forry votes or not really because she never had those votes in the first place?
Times takes note of our breakfast brouhaha
Reporter basically takes some quotes from the Globe article, then wraps those in a rehash of 40 years of Boston's racial history, as opposed to New York's racial history, in which the incumbent mayor accuses one of his would be successors of being racist because his black wife appears in campaign ads.
