Otherwise potential damage from frozen pipes.

Very surprising the fountain has been running this late - I'm sure it was shut down much earlier last year.

I was also on surprisingly late last year as well.

New groundskeepers maybe?

They most likely keep it filled to stop the skateboarders. I left Boston about 4 years ago but by that time they had started ticketing every skater instead of kicking them out. I got grabbed in the face and thrown to the ground + given a $100 ticket and had my $150 board illegally confiscated for trying to hold onto my board when the cops lined us all up and took our boards. I wouldn't be surprised if they got fed up and decided to just keep it filled with water until the weather gets too cold to skate in.

Its really a shame because i was told several times by cops that the main issue was the trash that all the kids would leave. I would always try to clean up and urge everyone else to throw their trash out as well but unfortunately a majority of skateboarders are spoiled, self-centered pricks who are too lazy to walk ten feet to the trash can even if it means being left alone by the police. I'm always embarrassed to tell people I skate because I get lumped in with these kids who are rude and obnoxious for no reason.

Copley is one of the best skatespots in the city and a great meetup point. Its a shame a few kids ruined it. Also a shame that the skatepark still hasnt been built over ten years after it was suppose to be started

Definitely need to get that skate park done, but if they're allowing water to freeze in the fountain, they're probably doing more damage than the skaters could ever do - they should just drop some kind of grate over it in the winter if they're serious about keeping skateboarders out - they really do trash the area.
