$500-million expansion of Landmark Center approved

The Herald reports the BRA yesterday gave the thumb's up to developer's plans to add 600 apartments, and a supermarket and other new retail space to the former Sears distribution center.
Ed. question: Wonder what happens to the Fenway Shaw's? That site seems ripe for redevelopment, too.

couldn't agree more. also wondering when the block that has the dominos, machine night club, etc… will go too. would be sad to lose yet another gay bar (after fritz closing last week), but it's bound to happen, and probably sooner than later.

The block with Dominoes in bound to go soon. I remember the cool days when the 1270 was on that block. THE gay bar to be at in the late 70s/early 80s.

That Shaw's is depressing, and every time I go in there I remember why I never go in there.
Can't wait for Wegman's so I can get a decent lunch for cheap.
Traffic
Yes lets just keep adding more cars to the area as if the traffic jams weren't bad enough already. What a great idea!
Just remember
You're not stuck in traffic, you are traffic. Take some personal responsibility and ride the T once and awhile.
Agreed
That area Is already extremely transit friendly. Though the MBTA may want to consider looking at 3 car D Line trains more consistently (I'm not sure that's even a thing anymore), because THAT traffic increase won't be fun.
Walking friendly, too
If you work at BU, if you work in the Medical Area, if you work at NU, Wentworth, Mass Art, Simmons, etc., and any number of private employers, you can walk to work, walk to the store, etc.

Other options
1. there are grocery stores nearby - many people can walk (note the carts people use)
2. you can take a cab back from the store
3. bikes with panniers, even a trailer
4. This location is in the city, and in the city you can get things delivered

I know right. We should keep the city shitty and low density so you can drive around it just like you can in the suburbs.
The whole point of cities is to be able to walk, bike, take a cab, or public transit with everything being close by.
Density
We need housing density where we can build it to offset the limits in so many parts of the city (South End, Backbay, Southie, etc... Single family and triple decker housing stock keeps pricing high.

The 50+ year old HoJo with the cool open mic comedy club is gone and a restaurant that opened maybe 6 months ago is gone so it seems that soon the Shaws and that BK will be gone too.

I remember talking with folks
I remember talking with folks there some years ago... back when they were just about to clobber the farmers market and the crossfit for the current development project there. The word was that the Shaw's was one of the only properties on that stretch of road that was "owner occupied." So, since you couldn't kick out the tenants, the plan was that the Target (which would sell groceries) would undercut the Shaw's and drive it out of business. .
Kinda skeezy - especially if you care about food deserts and that sort of thing - and it sort of reinforces the idea that the whole area is just a bunch of dominoes.
Anyway, wasn't the Landmark grocery store supposed to be a Wegmans?

That store . formerly a Star Market , was destroyed when Shaws bought out Star.
some Shaw's are being rebranded back to Star Market
It happened a few months ago in Porter Square, for instance.
With respect to the Shaws
With respect to the Shaws thing, they are closing two more stores , Medford , which was a Star , and Webster , dont know about that one ( http://medford.patch.com/groups/business-news/p/medford-shaws-closing ) . As they were sold last year to Cerberus Capital Management , perhaps they recognize Star market as a viable worthy brand in Mass. , Shaws not so much, maybe in Maine. If it were my monopoly set , I would re-brand the Mass. stores that are performing as Star Markets and loose the Shaw s name. They really made a mess of that chain, going back to when the queen's man J Sainsbury bought it .
They're currently renovating
They're currently renovating the Shaws -- going to add a wine & beer area, as well as more modern insides -- so I doubt it's going away anytime soon. Too bad they can't renovate the outside, though :/
