I'd like to read about a pedestrian hitting a car, and the car needing to go to the shop (pedestrian uninjured).

No, Swirly and her bike lock doesn't count...which would also be amusing though.

I have never used my lock to destroy property.

I have only used it to show my clear intention to defend myself in a painful and decisive way, should certain persons making threats against my person attempt to carry them out.

Funny how many of the same idiots here who have a problem with cyclists using locks as a self defense mode against motorized assailants are the first to prescribe pepper spray against other types of thug assailants, even in tunnels ...

...I hope it's as hilarious as the linked video above.

Completely forgot that commercial existed.

Yeah ... that could happen. Totally!

I'm surprised you don't get charged with 'brandishing' a weapon which can go down as felony assault if someone feels threatened. If a U-lock were to be treated the same as any other blunt or edged weapon that is by the authorities.

A middle-aged 5'3" tall woman/mom? Facing loud physical attack threats?

I think it would be a bit difficult to prosecute that, no?

I am practicing to body check any pedal powered assailant that blows through a crosswalk and attempts to make a threat against my person.

Blows through a crosswalk ON A RED LIGHT. Otherwise, the cyclist with the green light has the right of way, you would be in the wrong, and could possibly be sued for causing the collision.

Just keep that in mind.

Pedestrians still have the right of way if they're in a crosswalk. Cars don't have free reign to blow through crosswalks and take out pedestrians just b/c they had a green light.

If a pedestrian who does not have the right of way steps into a crosswalk in front of a cyclist - or car for that matter, and that cyclist cannot stop in time, that pedestrian caused the accident.

Just because MA doesn't ticket jaywalking, doesn't make it legal.

So, if I am cycling through an intersection on a green light, and you step in front of me, or push me down, you have violated the law (twice if you push me over) and I can sue you.

Of course, I am going to do my best to avoid hitting you because I'm not going to "win" anything but injuries by hitting you ... but you are responsible and can be liable if you didn't have the light and I did.

I do, of course, consider this when I'm walking and look both ways so as not to step in front of vehicles who have the legal right of way.

Bosguy......You're wrong.
If there is no traffic light at the crosswalk; you may use the crosswalk at any time. Provided, approaching vehicle/ bike has enough time to stop,15-20 feet, I think. (But, I wouldn't recommend just walking into the street)
If there is a traffic light; you may only cross when the light is red, or when the walk signal is lit.
In reality, it is free for all.

Kind of happened to me, though I was on a bicycle. A large SUV was drifting toward me and into the bike lane on Comm Ave, so I slowed down and moved to the right. At that moment the driver of a parked car opened her door without looking, knocking me into said SUV. Said SUV driver was irate, claiming that she was looking at a thousand dollars worth of damage to her bumper, but my bike and I were pretty much fine.

MGL's say anyone who opens a door into the path of traffic (you) is automatically at fault.

Shut it down!

Is anyone else concerned about the victim or is this just another excuse for an argument about bikes v cars? So far no one has even mentioned the poor guy who went to the ER.

The Uhub comment section is more and more frequently hijacked by the 'cyclist as victim' crowd... even if bikes have nothing to do with Adam's post.

Sad to hear about the elderly pedestrian.

You somehow manage to miss all the "War on Cars" crowd who show up anytime anyone even considers not catering wholly to their needs at the expense of all else.

That person was a good friend of mine's father from a very well respected Charlestown family. That man has done so much for other people throughout his life. Thank you for being the first commenter on here who sees beyond their own petty little agendas and exhibits some humanity.

Sad about the pedestrian who was hit. The reason for all the cycling talk is because just a week ago a cyclist was hit and KILLED near this location so many of us are on edge. It seems that we can all agree that this area is not safe for people. I am very interested in knowing when the rutherford ave redesign will be implemented.
