We have a brutal course...that is aided by a frequent tailwind and a course that ultimately drops 477 feet of elevation between start and finish. So, the hills (up and down) are destructive to the runners, but not in a way that can overrule the fact that you're always running east and get more energy by ending lower than you started compared to courses that don't go point-to-point.
Anyone else annoyed with WBZ's coverage of Marblehead Barbie? Six great international women runners were ahead of her today and two set course records and WBZ is spending hours covering blondie instead.
It's great to see all the attention showered on Meb Keflezghi, but for at least 15 minutes afterwards we never saw or heard anything at all about the #2 or #3 men's finishers. Don't they deserve some TV time too?
Yeah we heard about the #1 people in each division, Marblehead Barbie, and the Hoyts. The #2, & 3s in each division got only a brief mention. Lots of jibber jabber and little coverage with actual depth.
That was not my experience. Flanagan set the pace for most of the race and the coverage focused on that but everyone in the lead pack got plenty of mention. When she faltered the focus shifted to the spectacular move by Jeptoo and her challenge of the course record. I'm not sure what you were watching.
Nothing against the fine work by those who finished ahead of her (what, the top 3 beat the previous course record) but she is a local, so her quest is that much greater. I rooted for the USA, but to have her win would have been that much sweeter. Nothing against the winner, mind you. She did a great job.
Really?
What's your excuse, were you beaten as a child?
A formal local woman who, after finishing fourth last year declares that she was pissed off that someone set the bombs and is determined to win this year for Boston, runs the course 6 times previously in her training, executes her strategy of running a 2:22, leads for 20ish miles, only to lose to faster runners. After spilling her guts out on the course and crushing her personal best marathon time, WBZ conducts an emotion-filled finish line interview in an emotion-filled day in which she is still very gracious to the winners, the fans and the race itself.
And you need to come up with some pithy little name for her only some loser could come up with?

One of the fastest women's marathon runs ever!
Boston may not be eligible for a world record (net downhill run), but that is still one of the fastest women's marathons ever!
WR is currently 2:15:25. This would have been a WR as of 2001.
Interesting discussion regarding record legality
