A company that has a contract with Billy Joel to sell officially authorized Billy Joel concert clothing and tchotchkes yesterday filed a pre-emptive lawsuit against 200 John and Jane Does and "XYZ Company" to keep them from trying to sell Joelware outside the singer's concert next Thursday at Fenway Park.
Defendants John Does 1-100, Jane Does 1-100 and XYZ Company who are sued herein under fictitious names because their true names and capacities are unknown at this time. This complaint will be amended when their true names and capacities are ascertained.
In its lawsuit, filed in US District Court, Bravado International Group Merchandising Services, Inc. of Los Angeles, says it knows the bandits will try to hawk their wares because it's happened before at other Billy Joel performances.
The Unauthorized Merchandise sold and to be sold by Defendants is generally of inferior quality. The sale of such merchandise has injured and is likely to injure the Plaintiff’s reputation for high quality goods.
Also, yeah, their sale means less money for the company and Joel.
Bravado wants a judge to order the unknown Does to knock it off and, since that clearly hasn't stopped them before, order the local US Marshal and state and local police to seize any of the counterfeit goods they run across.

the junk HAS to be licensed. In other words, a glorified scam to make overpaid music performers and record company execs even richer than they already are.

Who in their right mind or would be caught dead wearing a Billy Joel Tour tee shirt these days? Grandmothers who still listen to billy joel music on cassette tape. The 1980's and billy joel videos from the 1980's are over.

Billy Joel is one of the best ever.
I'd wear his dirty socks.
But being in the shirt biz I have a really tough time letting people rip me off.
$30 for a shirt?
That's like, Johnny Cupcakes prices.

I happen to think that Billy Joel is one of the most untalented, boring, trite hacks to ever get successful in the music business, but it doesn't bother me if someone else wants to buy a shirt or a concert ticket. De gustibus and all that.
Just explain that to the crowd, I'm sure they'll be glad to know

If it's a simple matter of reputation, I'm sure Billy could spare a minute in between songs to explain to the crowd why the Tshirts he is selling are better than the ones outside, despite possibly being made in the same exact sweatshop. That way the fans will be able to make an informed decision, and no injury will occur.
As any halfway decent lawyer will tell you...
