.. a cigar smoking pig in a top hat on one side and a weasel clutching a quill pen and a parchment scroll on the other, preferably with a dunce cap.

The originals were ripped down and later replicated years later for an amicable visit by royalty.

For a very long time the old Statehouse was covered in billboards and tacky advertising. The building wasn't razed due to historical value. But at the same time it wasn't respected. It wasn't until the Bostonian Society purchased the building that is was really cared for as a true historic landmark worthy of a museum.

There's an eagle mounted on the building's west facade. When the building was restored as a museum in 1882, there was some opposition to reinstalling replicas of the lion and unicorn, so an eagle was placed at the other end. The opposition to the lion and unicorn at that time came largely from the city's Irish residents.

See [http://bostoniansociety.blogspot.com/2014/07/old-state-house-lion-and-un.... The Pilot was published by Irish Catholics (and is today owned by the archdiocese); the Transcript was the newspaper that was favored by the Beacon Hill Brahmins.

(Too bad none of the current stories mention the eagle; it's a point well taken.)

"The unicorn is going to get a new coating of platinum called palladium" Really? Are we going to be transmuting platinum into palladium? These are two different atomic elements.

Platinum and Palladium are often alloyed for the same appearance at a lower cost.

Let's hope these beauties dont meet the same fate as the Chinatown Foo Dogs - given as a gift to the City and removed for safety during big dig construction. They ended up as garden ornaments at a Modern Continental honchos Lexington home. He said they were debris from the big dig that was due to be destroyed.
