Citizen complaint of the day: Ankle-breaking pavement in Brighton

A limping citizen complains about some godawful pavement on Guest Street in Brighton - and attaches a photo of a newly broken ankle to buttress the point:

I would like to thank the City of Boston for the beautiful pavement on the street outside 20 Guest St. Stepping off the curb and into this hole next to the sewer, almost killing myself and breaking my ankle! Sweet deal! Thanks again!

Um, this is a "same old, same old" in this area. I take my life into my own hands if I want to walk down the street....

The whole area needs much better pedestrian infrastructure. Trying to cross at the Soldier's Field / Market / Western intersection is like playing a very high stakes game of Frogger.

Whole area is dug up. Lots of work going on. Maybe some day it'll all be perfect, but today isn't that day.

The world isn't perfect. Watch where you step. Oh, that does look painful, I do feel bad for you.

Great point -- I never noticed how bad it was. http://goo.gl/maps/Q9hdG

No crosswalk markings, no walk signals, and no curb ramps.

With those hamhocks? Not unexpected.

up

That's some first class body-shaming and victim-blaming. Top fucking shelf.

give it a rest.

Sorry, but "hamhocks"??? Seriously? Have you or he ever seen a busted leg before ... THEY SWELL UP.

In any case, I suppose women should stop cycling because riding bikes gives them "hamhocks".

I'll lighten up when Adam deletes that stupid asshole comment.

Agreed. What a jerk.

Holy moley, sorry. Can't make a joke?

Try to include a little "humor" next time.

Fat jokes have been forbidden for about a decade. You are an ignorant bodyist. And people falling down? Also deemed not funny.
Pie-in-the-face gags, rubber chickens, and knock knock jokes are scheduled to expire in 2018.
Pre-ban Marx Brothers movies can only be transferred via a licensed CFL, assuming you can obtain a tax stamp.

Too soon?

Don't laugh- I saw a pie-in-the-face video with NFL players/ cheerleaders as willing participants for charity- seriously described as "degrading" and "sexist" on a sports message board

comment is still there!

Yes, we all see the humor in looking at a disembodied piece of unphotoshopped woman ... and calling her names!

I've got a joke, too. What do you call a deranged combat vet with PTSD and a gun? Officer!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!

It is sooo funny because I say so, see? This is how it works when you want to be a bully: I can say something atrocious that isn't funny, and all I have to say is "but its a joke, see" and that makes it all okay!

Just like it did when wmd's football team stuffed that nerd in a locker. Hahah - jooooke!

edit: on second thought, it's a beautiful late summer night and why am I arguing on the internet

We only shoved Terriers kids into lockers.

swelling of said ankle.

...the whole street is under construction and people should be careful

They don't usually put sewer grates in crosswalks...so I'm betting your ankle didn't belong there in the first place.

There used to be a doozy in Kenmore Square, and it wasn't visible - it was somewhat buried under the curbing, right where the crosswalk landed.

I didn't break my ankle in it, but twisted it pretty badly. They replaced it after it "ate" a BU student's leg (grating was rotted through).

There is a similar gratewell to hell right near the corner of my street and the cross street, and no crosswalk at that intersection. Unfortunately these are areas where potholes tend to grow. And if the catch basin isn't cleaned out occasionally it may actually be covered up with leaves and other debris, making it even easier to lure unsuspecting pedestrians into it's ankle-twisting maw.

I actually went and looked at Google Streetview because I wondered about that - the storm drain is just to one side of the crosswalk across Guest Street. If the person was trying to cross Market Street rather than Guest Street (1) there's no marked crosswalk at all and (2) the storm drain is right there.

If they're crossing a street outside of the crosswalk, then it's their prerogative and at their risk. If the ramp or crosswalk somehow bent their ankle, they might have a case to complain about. If they're stepping off the curb anywhere they feel like it and can't be bothered to look where they're walking better, then how is that something to complain to the city about?

If you find a problem with the pavement, put in a pothole complaint. The fact that you used your ankle instead of your eyes in order to find the pothole is your problem. Take some responsibility for your own actions.

So, when you park your car, do you park it in the crosswalk? If not, how do you exit to the sidewalk?

IOW, stop being so damn preachy and judgy.

People cross at corners. This is accepted and many states and cities consider corners to be defacto crosswalks.

Maybe you should walk around a bit and see for yourself - like, in one of the neighborhoods yet to be blighted by proper ramps. Conditions are generally better than they once were, thanks to standards for construction, but these improvements don't extend to everywhere one might reasonably and legally cross a street.

So if her foot fell into a hole, within a crosswalk, than that is ok?

It is the responsibility of the city to make sure that there is no holes in the pavement where people tend to walk, which may cause severe injury, inside or outside of crosswalks.

I don't know about you, Kaz, but when I walk, I look ahead, or side to side (if I am crossing the road), and not down at my feet. Whether I am in a crosswalk or not.

So, when you park your car on the street, you crawl out the passenger door directly to the sidewalk? And enter the same way?

come across quite a few sewer grates located in crosswalks. Maybe not the best design, but they do exist.

For example:

There's a sewer drain right in the crosswalk as you leave St. Mary's to cross Soley St.

Watch where you're going.

I think I'll share it with my legally blind neighbor.

up

I hope you don't, that would be extremely rude and insensitive. I do hope your neighbor has adaptive equipment to help he/she navigate streets as safely as possible, so he/ she isn't relying on eyesight alone.

Great in theory, but it really doesn't exist other than having a dog or a cane, neither of which is likely to help someone in such a situation.

Nice try at deflecting things onto me - but I think you are the insensitive one here who doesn't want to actually figure out what life is like for those with limited sight, and thus fills the void with his own imagination.

I was unaware that this CC was initiated by an individual with vision impairment; unless you know something we don't.

"but I think you are the insensitive one here who doesn't want to actually figure out what life is like for those with limited sight, and thus fills the void with his own imagination", I really don't care what you think and I don't think you know what you are talking about.

I work daily with adaptive equipment programming and individuals with not only severe vision impairment, but who also suffer from para or quadriplegia. People that defy odds every day and are extremely resilient.

There is a lot more out there than sticks and dogs. I advocate for individuals with disabilities and have worked with the city, state and MBTA to improve the conditions of the roads, curb cuts, crosswalks, t-stations, etc.

I don't need my imagination here and am not a he. You have some how spun the CC about a lady stepping in a hole, to be about your legally blind neighbor?!? Cool story bro.

When I was walking in Boston, I stepped up onto sidewalk and my shoe got stuck in a hole in curb. My foot twisted in a way it shouldn't have. I sprained my foot/ankle. Very painful. The sidewalks are awful

Apparently that was your own fault, loser.

I wouldn't have lodged a city complaint.. I would have called this guy:

/humor

You could provoke conniptions, fits and scolding torrents because it is very important to ensure the purity of comments in a busy little regional blog.

Sorry that this happened. Here's hoping that this person gets their ankle taken care of properly, and that s/he feels better soon.

It's too bad that the city is so pokey about taking care of things, if one gets the drift.
