A Location of the Find Would Be A Start

The picture looks WWII vintage. You must remember, going into the Marines in South Boston was a right of passage, since it used to be jokingly considered the military wing of the American Catholic Church. The photo may also be Korean War era.
A good place to start might be at the VFW Post on Ellery Street behind Andrew Station. Talk with some of the older members and give them the address of the find. Some old memories and answers might be able to come forward based on the recollection of the photo and location.

Looks very much like a former softball teammate of mine. Maybe his Dad? I'll direct him here.

So this photo appeared in a Hyde Park group on Facebook a few days ago along with this message (I'm posting it as it might help people figure out who he was- I have taken out the identifying house #'s and original posters name for the sake of privacy):
So where was this attic really?

I don't know if I'd jump to the conclusion that anyone who puts on a uniform is a hero. Maybe there's a reason his photo ended up in an attic.
