The wind is picking up
And it's crashing trees all over the place. As of 7:10 p.m., Washington Street in Jamaica Plain is blocked in both directions by a tree that came down near Montebello. Memorial Drive near Harvard Square is also down to no lanes thanks to a downed tree.
And people in Smart Cars, Fiats and other tiny little boxes might want to think twice before heading out. Christine reports it's so windy on 95 north of the city that "cars are almost hitting each other."
The National Weather Service has a high-wind warning in effect until 8 a.m. for the coast, from New Hampshire down to the Cape Cod Canal:
WINDS...NORTHEAST 25 TO 35 MPH WITH GUSTS UP TO 60 MPH.
TIMING...THE STRONGEST WINDS WILL OCCUR TONIGHT WITH GUSTS UP TO 60 MPH POSSIBLE. THE HIGHEST OF THESE WINDS WILL BE ACROSS COASTAL ESSEX COUNTY.

Biking home = adventure
I saw a 50cc scooter get stopped dead and blown backwards by a gust on Rt.16 crossing the Mystic River! I picked up a gear and laid into it, or it might have happened to me (I was also on the sidepath next to the road, and could lean over more).
I had to draft a car to make it down Federal Street - huge gusts in the street canyon!
Limbs down. Bits of trees down. Bits of debris around. Jaywalking trash cans, too! I pulled a couple from the roadway in Charlestown so cars could get through, too (the drivers waited for me to do this).
Some waterfront passages meant getting sprayed with salt off of the harbor. The wheel side of my panniers still had salt rime!
Winds kept changing direction and there were sudden random gust bursts that seemed to blow straight down.
It was EPIC!
PS: The small cars are going to be LESS vulnerable than the big cars and trucks. Why? Far less surface area presenting to the wind. I saw several semis pulled off at Assembly Square. I also saw a couple of Fiats and Fits doing just fine, while a van was struggling to keep it on the road.
sounds amazing..
but what was the couple doing in the middle of the roadway in Charlestown?
Being sort of trashy
And trying to cross the street ... while spinning around.
scooters
there's a vespa parked outside of international place on high street this morning. while i admire their apparent BALLS OF STEEL, i'll be checking on whether or not it remains upright throughout the day.
my guess is no.

Swirls , sounds like a scene out of The Wizard of Oz. Used to like being at Kelly's during a storm like this, sitting , eating , groovin , then weo johnny , I got to get out in this stuff and get some work done. As long as you had weight on , no problemos , amiga !

Trash Day in Rozzie Tomorrow!
And.. with this rain and wind... that the mattress and headboard leaning up against the house waiting for Thursday's trash pick-up have about a 17% chance of being taken to the curb by morning.
Sorry neighbors!!
