Transit Police report arresting a Cambridge resident on charges he started an unprovoked attack on a man on a Red Line train, then followed him out of the train into Harvard Square station and punched him in the head.
Christopher Hicks, 26, is scheduled for arraignment today in Cambridge District Court on charges of assault and battery and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon - a shod foot - police say.
Police say that shortly before 8 p.m. yesterday, Hicks was occupying his time by "harassing numerous females" on an outbound Red Line train. Growing bored, or something, with that, Hicks allegedly turned his attention to a 30-year-old man who was also on the train:
Hicks, without provocation, then focused his attention onto the victim who attempted to ignore Hicks' boisterous conduct. As the victim was exiting the train at Harvard Sq., station Hicks deliberately kicked the back of the victim's feet forcing him to lose his balance. The victim asked Hicks to cease his behavior and continued on his way. Hicks followed the victim a short distance and then suddenly struck him in the head with a closed fist.
Hicks hung around Harvard Square station, where arriving police quickly found him thanks to the victim and another witness.
Officers approached Hicks who refused to furnish his name and was generally uncooperative and hostile towards the officers. Hicks was placed into custody and transported to Transit Police HQ,. During the booking process Hicks continued his violent behavior and refused to comply with simple instructions and assaulted the officer by kicking him. Hicks was brought under control and eventually processed.
Innocent, etc.

There's no excuse for violent behavior and I doubt the Court will give him a "slap on the wrists" but some people refuse to accept help offered to them in the mental health field and end up homeless, penniless and generally angry at the world with little to no hope for help not the capacity to think about seeking out help. We spin these folks through prison sentences then toss them back out into the streets where the same behavior will undoubtedly continue. Prison as punishment or prison as a deterrent to committing crime does not have any effect on people with mental health issues. I'm just sorry for the poor random man who drew the violent attention and am truly glad to know the innocent victim wasn't hurt worse as that is going to appen someday without a system in place to force some folks into getting the help they need. Do we as a society just give up on the mentally ill who have violent tendencies and keep spinning them though County prisons until they finally cause serious harm to an unsuspecting innocent bystander?

There are plenty of programs that can help. Whether or not one wants to take the initiative / take a shot at self-discipline is another thing entirely.
I am happy that no one got seriously hurt or killed this time around.

Looks a lot like a guy who tried to provoke me in Davis Square a few years ago. I'm a guy, was about 30 at the time, and minding my own business. Crowded sidewalk, near the T station, and this guy out of nowhere starts calling me "faggot". Also meets the description of a guy who called a female friend a "fat cow" after she didn't give him a cigarette at the Davis Sq busway.

I was at Saloon two years ago and Davis waiting to order a drink, completely out of the blue, a similar looking individual comes up and says the same thing to me. Immediately got thrown out. Maybe it was the same night but I'm guessing this wasn't a one-time time. Hope he gets more than a slap on the wrist

I would like to remind readers that as of August, you no longer are required to obtain a restricted FID to purchase OC spray/mace.
That being said, maybe don't discharge it in a crowded train car.

The human body is mostly water and fairly conductive.
Easy enough to work that one out.
Also, does this guy dabble in sob story? There was a guy who looked a lot like him on a Red Line train late night a few weeks back, and several large college guys got fed up with him, linked arms and literally bounced him out the door of the train just as it closed.

Make sure the nozzle is facing away from you.
ProTip #2: If you don't feel like getting mace, hairspray in the eyes can disorient someone for a few seconds.

what this article doesn't mention is that he ended up on a 77 bus that was due to depart. It took 10 minutes for Transit Police to arrive, leaving a full bus of confused and frustrated passengers. They didn't tell us anything about why we were just sitting in the busway. Then the cops showed up and we were on our way within a few.
Huh?

What do you think would have happened if the bus driver had announced that they were waiting for the Transit cops to show up? I'll wait while you think about that for a second.

The point is more that it took 10 minutes, not that they left the bus just sitting there. No one complained after we saw why. 10 minutes for cops to show up? C'mon.

By SwirlyGrrl
Fri, 10/24/2014 - 11:15pm
They may not have known where the guy went, exactly, and may have had to go through all the buses waiting.
They also needed to know who they were looking for so that they didn't pull some other hapless 26 year old guy of medium height and build and brown hair and such off the bus.
They also had to make their way from a station exit to where the #1 bus is, which also takes time.
I can see how it might take a few minutes.
Meanwhile, it seems like it was a bad night all around for homophobic knuckleheads. Except there were cops standing around watching this until the other passengers took Bubba to the carpet: http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2014/10/watch-bystander...

Mental illness
By anon
Sat, 10/25/2014 - 12:09pm
has it occurred to anyone Mr. Hicks may have a serious mental illness? And has it occurred to anyone one of the main reasons there are so many 'crazy' people out there is because our public mental health system and laws regarding mental health issues are archaic based mostly on badly abused and implemented 'reforms' from the 1960s,1970s and 80s? And no, it IS NOT all the fault of Reagan or Republicans, not by a long shot, although they share in the blame. ALL our political parties on the right and left (alleged right and left) are to blame. IMHO laws making it next to impossible hospitalize the mentally ill (many leftist arguments about mentally ill people having a 'right' to be out on the street, homeless, etc.), the closing of our psychiatric hospitals and institutions (instead of properly reforming them), substituting 'community based' out-patient care (or lack thereof), the horrendous abuse of psychiatric drugs at every level, are all primarily to blame.
Will anything listed above change legitimately for the better? I seriously doubt it. Too many benefit $ from the status quo.
