Reminiscent of Robert Benchley's "cable" (the 1920's equivalent of Twitter) to his editor upon arrival in Venice, Italy: "Streets full of water. Please advise."
So, they can give away free internet access on the ferries, but they can't get the ventilation on the trains working?
The conductor in my car on the 5:20 Fitchburg-bound train yesterday had to leave the doors open so that the passengers wouldn't expire from the heat and lack of oxygen.
Give me a break!!!
If the possibility of spending their commute on the internet sucks some people out of their low MPG luxury sedans and SUVs and turns them into paying customers, all the better.
Besides, how much can this cost? Certainly less than setting it up on the trains.
It's already on most trains, at least a couple of cars usually. They still need to complete the work so that the entire train set is covered. I think it's a great thing, even on my short ride. And yes, there are lots of maintenance issues that should be addressed, as others point out, but it's a very low cost service enhancement, and is the sort of thing the 'T should continue with. Anytime there is an opportunity for a low cost upgrade, they should jump on it. The cost to wire the trains and boats is insignificant measured against the entire budget.
I wouldn't dare pull my lappy out on any train or bus. It's just begging for trouble. The only people I ever see do it are tourists from other countries and the occasional businessman giving off a vague "I'm not from around here" vibe.
Hope it works better than the free wifi on the comuter rail. At least on the Worcester line, it almost never works...and they ignored my email complaints.
