Transit Police report the man wanted for stealing the phone of a woman who died when hit by a Red Line train Thursday night is in custody this morning.
Transit Police say Josue Gonzalez, 26, of Brockton, turned himself in at their Southampton Street headquarters around 9:30 p.m. yesterday - and that they have the woman's phone.
He is scheduled for arraignment on a charge of larceny in Boston Municipal Court on Monday.

Ya, so some fool took advantage of a terrible situation, but his poor judgement really only caused harm to himself. I feel sorry for all of the people who were forced to witness such a heinous, violent act as a person throwing herself in front of a train, particularly for the friend. I'm sure the harm done to these innocent people will last a long long time. I can't even begin to understand the desperation that causes someone to commit such a hideous thoughtless act, and I try to be sympathetic of that, but I think focusing like we do on the dope who took the phone unfortunately ignores the real victims in this sad tale.
Some of us are able to focus on more than one thing.

You have created a false dichotomy - one can both be sensitive to the topic of suicide while at the same time decrying a scumbag who watched a woman brutally kill herself and his first instinct was to steal from her. His conduct indicates he is depraved and has no moral code. It's outrageous, and he should be criticized.
Thank You

I hear what ur sayin.. People should be able to walk and chew gum.. But what the previous commenter is pointing out holds more true these days. People are easily distracted.. The media pounches on the crime story and the victim is all but forgotten.
This dude is messed up and I'm guessing has a long history of theft if it's his go-to reaction to note things to steal no matter the circumstance. You can see he was shocked but he puts his foot on the phone... I heard this story though, and I was much more concerned about the woman. No time and hardly any word on the woman. I thought it was an accident for the woman at first which would have been even worse. But that's what they want also, to leave it open to imagination to exaggerate the horror..
The point is they focus too much on one aspect and neglect the real story.. The woman will be forgotten in the news as we focus on this fiend who should get more of a mention than a spotlight.. It IS completely depraved tho

The Jerk Store Called

And they said the Douchebag Store called looking for him.
I hope they make him appear in court naked wearing a cell phone around his neck. This kid can't be shamed enough. Did you guys see the actual video?
He was shocked for a second because he watched a girl kill herself and get crushed by a moving train then without missing a beat he steals her cell phone.
The vid tells the whole story. I hope the media puts his name, email, Facebook page, Twitter, place of work and address on the front page.
Just no empathy or conscience at all.

Scenario A: Dumbass sees an opportunity to steal a phone.
Scenario B: Bystander momentarily stunned by seeing a suicide picks up the phone and wanders off to try and find someone to give it to.

It's SO obvious you didn't watch the video.
Watch how he first steps on the phone and looks around.
Then give me all your bullshit scenarios.

... what would you do next?
I'd use the phone to call 911 and say "Someone just jumped in front of a train, and she left this phone on the platform. Send an ambulance here at once, and who should I bring the phone to?"
I sure wouldn't wait 24 hours to bring it to a police station.
First of all

Everyone has their own cell phones to call 911 with.
Second of all, there is an emergency call box, a person driving the train and many many bystanders and T employees to tell to call for help.
Again, did you watch the video?
He did none of those things. I'm not debating you over this nonsense. He's a turd. There's no defense. The police had to put his face on every media there is before he turned himself in. He didn't call for help. He didn't try to do anything except steal a dead person's cell phone.
Reprehensible.

Here - the video starts around 0:40. I think the T released it to TV stations, but nobody else.

I was on the blue line at State when a woman on H fell off the platform onto the tracks.
I and another man flagged the train down then jumped down there and got her out. The EMT's came and took her away.
No one stole anything from her.
