Transit Police report a man, believed to be in his 40s, was on the inbound side of the tracks near West Gloucester station when he was hit and killed by an inbound commuter-rail train around 6:30 p.m.
Police and the DA's office are investigating what the man was doing on the tracks.
Yesterday, a woman was hit by a train in Bridgewater, but she survived.

.,,, if you've ever been around active rail tracks, it's damn scary how hard it is to hear a train coming straight towards you, or to judge how fast it's moving,

Which is why tracks are for trains, not people, and you should NEVER trespass on a rail line.
You are assuming that this person didn't want to get hit

It is entirely possible that person was there because getting hit was the point.
So sad, but often true.
Whatever the reason for his being on the tracks, may he rest in peace.
No, I didn't assume it wasn't

No, I didn't assume it wasn't a suicide. That is entirely possible, but my comments still apply. He was still trespassing, and still shouldn't have been there. There are plenty of ways to end your own life without potentially traumatizing someone else. The engineer of that train is going to have to live with the image of hitting this person in his mind for the rest of his life. But no one ever thinks about that.

quieter these days than one might think. The fact they don't routinely blow their horns - thanks to the noise nazis - doesn't help matters either.
But yes, the lesson is clear - don't walk on railroad tracks.
i saw the train coming in
