Yeah, that's it.
You aren't tossing out old bread, you're composting!
Like all those old apples that I put out in the backyard. They were squishy but not rotten. Hortense Doe and Hartford loved them!
Deer poop is compost, right?
If you really want to help birds through the cold, suet is a good choice. Might be able to find it at a butcher shop.

We have a suet feeder in our front yard - Ocean State Job Lot always has blocks of suet mixed with seed plus nuts or dried fruit, for $1 apiece for a 6" x 6" x 1" block. We buy the blocks 6 at a time and fill the feeder as needed.

I've been feeding rabbits in my yard nightly since August, 2011 (long story) and put out extra's last night as they need the fuel.
Of course our neighborhood now has an abundance of rabbits.

Mass Audubon had an interesting blog post about how birds weather the cold weather: http://blogs.massaudubon.org/yourgreatoutdoors/bir...

+1 on the Mass. Audubon article. The 'counter-current heat exchange system' running through bird legs bit was quite interesting.
Cats

I have many stray/feral cats in my neighborhood... I feel sorry for them when it snows or gets cold. I wish there was something i could do. I don't want to feed them in fear they will continue to come back for food.. but I don't want them to freeze and starve. Nor do I really want to call the MSPCA because they DO help greatly to keep the rat population down. Not sure what else i could do.
Last year during a snowstorm, I was shoveling the walk on the side of the house. It was snowing pretty bad and windy. I stopped for a minute to catch my breath and all I could hear besides the wind was this poor cat crying somewhere nearby. :( It just didnt lay out. Sounded like it needed help. But with so many houses and hiding spots in my neighborhood, it would have been impossible to find.
Poor kitty :( I hate that..
Make them shelters!

[img]http://www.alleycat.org/image/ShelterBuilding_8.jp... Step-by-step instructions for a little "craft" project that can help ferals weather extremes.
Your very own cat house ...
Also, you might contact local rescue organizations that trap-neuter-return ferals, and possibly even set up your own colony if you are really interested.
OMG Thank you
