Wonder if their wedding cake will be a pie?

Wedding proposal at Pi Alley

Joe Cabrera wasn't the only person to head to Pi Alley in Downtown Crossing around 9:26 on this fine 3/14/15. He reports watching a man get down on one knee and propose to his inamorata at exactly that time:

Bride says groom does geeky stuff.

H/t Ginnette for the headline.

Starting at 9:26 am, they gave away a small "cutie pie" to anyone who could recite the first 10 digits of pi, and larger pies to people who could recite 314 or 628 digits.

That was me who witnessed the whole thing: I planned to be at Pi Alley today for years (yeah, yeah, call me a geek) and I was about to leave when I saw this fellow drop down to his knee. I felt I should give them some privacy so I crossed the street over to the Starbucks but not before I took a discreet pic. Before long, they were asking some random stranger to take their photo. I came back over to ask them if I did indeed that proposal at that specific time and place, and I sure did! Her exact words were: "He's always doing geeky stuff like this."

Didn't catch their names, but I congratulated them and went on my merry way. I hope we find out more about them at some point.

That's a nice proposal. Memorable yet reasonably private and discreet. Far too many proposals now are massive public events. Flash mobs, announcements on airplanes, billboards, etc. There's nothing romantic about such public displays. It's all part of the bridezilla "everything about the wedding must be incredibly fairy tale perfect and huge scale beyond all reason" thing that goes on now. In fact, if I'm not mistaken, most sports teams don't even allow wedding proposals on the scoreboard anymore because it just causes too much trouble, i.e. the woman might say no and it makes the team look "unlucky".

In my experience, huge public proposals are planned and pulled off by men - women tend to be way less into them, because there is so much pressure to say yes under those circumstances.

I'm glad sports teams are declining to be involved.
