Man apparently jumped off the Tobin Bridge this morning
By adamg on Fri, 03/27/2015 - 10:00am
The Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports:
State Police investigating an abandoned motor vehicle on the Tobin Bridge at about 6:40 this morning observed the body of its apparent owner on a Charlestown street below the bridge. A death investigation is now under way by State Police detectives and other specialized units. The evidence does not currently suggest foul play.

As sad and tragic as this is
As sad and tragic as this is at least the individual did not harm anyone else, e.g. airplane full of people.
Not Exactly
People live and work down there, and people have to retrieve and remove the body.
Really Swirl?
Really?
I know right?
Screw her for thinking about peoples mental well being after seeing some jump from a bridge or having to recover the body.
Really dude?
Somebody dies from mental illness
and she shows more concern for the bystanders.
Dead people
Don't care what we think. They are beyond suffering, unlike the living.
You might want to check down thread for a witness account. Oh, wait - that would mean actually noting what is being said in context! No hobbyhorse to ride there.
Please do tell us about those times when you have been the one to find the dead body, though. I'm sure you thoroughly judged it for lack of reflectivity.
Yes, I discovered the body of a suicide victim
and reported it to police, just over a year ago. My thoughts have been for my friend, not so much finding him. BTW, he was a middle aged man.
Sorry for your loss
That had to be a pretty rough situation.
I have never found a dead person that I knew, but I have had one jumper narrowly miss myself and a friend, and found a body in the Charles. When people feel that they need to end their lives in such a public manner, it leaves an impact on loved ones, responders, and strangers.
The poster who I replied to said that this particular suffering person didn't hurt anybody else ... I merely pointed out that wasn't true.
Thanks
I am thankful that it was not a violent suicide. Being at my father's bedside as he died this September I think of more often.
I think...
...and I acknowledge that this will sound rather judgey...but I think that any time someone has died and your instinct is to respond with something containing the words "at least", that those are words better left unsaid. I've heard those words a bunch of times following the death of someone close to me, and they were unhelpful at best.
Well
It's better to splat on a deserted road instead of jumping in front of the train and potentially injuring hundreds if the operator slams on the emergency brake and sends all the passengers flying. Or flying a plane into the ground and taking all the passengers with you. It's all relative...
And this will also sound judgy....
....but it might be nice to remember that, in recent days, we've seen evidence of victims' families/friends reading these posts. Why make things even more painful for them with such cavalier language?
You're wrong
That area is not deserted.
And it's better to not go splat at all, quite frankly.
But it's a false dichotomy
And that's the choice, is it? Either "splat on a deserted road" or "jumping in front of the train"? No other possibilities?
Brené Brown said it better than I can, so I'll steal a quote: "Rarely, if ever, does an empathic response begin with, 'At least...'."
Not really
You don't know if anyone was down there at the time.
That area is more populated than you realize. There is a factory-type building (used to be a USG plant) right next to the bridge, you drive between the supports just to get to it. It's housing at least Save That Stuff, The Crate Escape, Boston Krav Maga, DownEast Cider with room for more, I think. There is at least 1 boat company, a tarmac for learning to drive the Big Rigs, the AutoPort, the elevator structure that people use to get to the old toll booths ... and that's just off the top of my head.
I work at the Boston's
I work at the Boston's Autoport #Diversified Automtive, right directly under the tobin and was there when this had happened. So sad and shocking. I think the image alone is haunting me right now
Shoot
That sucks. I can't imagine. If you can, get help to deal with it. Even if it's a sleep aid from your GP if you're not the talking type.
Ugh
I hate this. I feel bad for the person who did it, their family, and the people who work down in that area.
My husband used to - and the 3 or 4 years he was down there (200 Terminal St), there was at least 3 or 4 suicides. He wasn't always around at the time, but once he did help settle the nerves of an electrician who had witnessed such an event. Yes, proper authorities had been called already.
Most suicides are middle aged men
What is being done to help deal with this? Why are so many guys, especially in their 40s and 50s, but also young men and elderly, killing themselves? It's much higher than other demographics.
Most homeless are also also men, as are most schizophrenics and substance abusers.
Thoughts and prayers are with
Thoughts and prayers are with the family of the deceased.
Those who work at the car port and Mystic have seen some things that people should not have to see. Hope many people were not around.
Growing problem?
So if you follow Adam's posts, it seems like 7 people have jumped from the Tobin since Dec of 2013. Obviously not as frequent a problem as some other bridges like the Golden Gate, which sees an average of 18 a year since 1937, but still really sad. Wondering if it is time for a barrier to be built or for more phones to be added (the only one I have ever seen on the bottom deck is right when you come out of the tunnel and the sign is kind of worn and crappy--not sure about the top deck as I rarely use it).
Bigger problem b/c there's no toll collectors?
Condolences to friends and family.
I discussed this w/ a passenger as we drove over bridge. I thought there may have been more jumps since the tolls (and people on bridge) went away.
water
when people jump why dont they land in the water? i always hear news that they land in the street. why is this?
tobin bridge jumper
the information you have posted is incorrect unless there was a second jumper the same day, it was 9am Tuesday morning and he walked away from his car and climbed over the rail of the bridge...the body was recovered in the river...
