Crews will pick up leaves and yard waste next week, city promises

We weren't the only people on our block - or across the city - who put leaf bags out this week, only to find them sitting forlornly by the curb at the end of the day. Turns out there wasn't any leaf collection this holiday week, but it resumes next week.

Frustratingly, the schedule this year is significantly curtailed form last year. This schedule shows the pickup days: http://www.cityofboston.gov/images_documents/Yard%20Waste%20Brochure%202...

A lot of people saw the flier with yard pickup "April through November" and just assumed it was every week. They never read the calendar part that showed specific pickup weeks

The City sent out an actual calendar with the weeks of yard waste highlighted. For some reason we got 2 of them. I, in turn, wrote down each week on the wall calendar in the kitchen. Every other week until November, then weekly, then, if you are like me, try to figure out what to do with the left over leaves until April (they got buried in the snow for 2 months, so I could ignore them for that time.)

But judging from my walk to the bus stop this morning and my run in the other direction last night, you were not the only one thinking that yard waste was this week.

The city sent out a detailed list, which I also added to my kitchen calendar. The problem was that the city assumed that people would actually read and pay attention to this notice. You can't change something, tell people, and expect them to get it the first time. Apparently you need to put up variable message boards at every rotary.
