Hollywood connection aside, the Tavern is still pretty cozy.
Nice Guinness pour. In my experience, it's a place where the old-timers and the newcomers are getting along just fine without affecting each others' costumes.

Scally cap wearing yuppies moved to Southie because they think Robin Williams hung out in L Street Tavern. You morons don't know any better. The tavern today is not the one in the movie. Keep buying the T shirts, they may come back in fashion someday.

I'm a yuppie interloper who lived in City Point for a couple of years post-Good Will Hunting, drank at the L Street a few times a month. Just my anecdotal experience, but I didn't see any of the newcomer posing or town/gown tension you're alluding to.
A few tourists followed guidebooks into the place from time to time, but they were obviously out of place, well-behaved and tolerated, and that wasn't the night-to-night experience there. They were mostly Europeans, not Americans. I remember one fresh-faced German undergraduate with excellent English looking crestfallen when I told him it was doubtful that Matt Damon would be showing up anytime soon. (I bet he knew the movie well enough to know that Robin Williams wasn't in the L Street scenes.)
In my brief experience, most people who live nearby, regardless of how long they've lived there, manage to get along just fine. As is well-documented here, parking is a sore spot in winter, but I don't think anyone, regardless of the length of their tenure, is covered in glory with their behavior on that score. I'm glad that I left before this past winter. It sucked everywhere in Boston for street parkers like me, but I'm certain it was particularly hellish in Old Southie.

People love a good gangster movie. Boston isn't immune when it comes to that. There are tons of gangster films set in New York. It's time for a new city, and Boston has a ton of good gangster lore. And it's about time the Italians got a break :P

I thought Costello (which I'm sure you know is Irish, not Italian) in The Departed was supposed to be Whitey Bulger. You can go all the way back to The Friends of Eddie Coyle in 1973 and find only one Italian character. In between was Blue Hill Avenue. I don't remember any Italians in that, although there might have been some.
You may be disappointed to learn that at least one of Bulger's closest associates was named Flemmi, so this movie might not be the break-giving vehicle you anticipate.

I think it looks pretty decent, although Depp's blue eyes are REALLY creepy. Surely Whitey's weren't that intense? Hard to tell much else from a trailer, but it seems not to be too much of a caricature, based on this quick glimpse. Depp might actually have remembered how to act again, instead of relying on schtick. Also, I see Pawnee's beloved Adam Scott with a pornstache - so I'm totally in.

Yeah he's pretty creepy in that.. I had to do "is that really Johnny Depp" take a few times.
But honestly, its not a stretch from his role as drug king pin George Jung in 2001's "Blow". Jung was from Weymouth, so Depp has the accent down.

It's just the same conniving and dark-side guy as he played as Sherlock, really.

I was thinking about this this morning after listening to WGBH play an audio of the bombs going off during the Marathon. Why celebrate this guy? He killed more people than the Tsarnaevs, spread pain throughout the city. I don't understand the vicarious pleasure people get from watching him portrayed. Picture yourself with that gun pointing in your face...it happened to real people.
I agree with you, but..
I'm going to reserve judgement on the film until I see it. I've known quite a few people over the years who while seemingly otherwise decent, were Whitey sympathizers. To them, he was some sort of Robyn Hood character. Maybe that was the myth he was trying to perpetuate. I hope the movie destroys that myth - but who knows.
I'm also going to see it with some folks from my neighborhood, since it was used as a Southie replacement. Nearly every outdoor place in that trailer is somewhere in Lynn.
not necessarily a "celebration"
it is possible for a movie about a bad guy to make it clear that he was, in fact, a Bad Guy. if the movie sticks to the book, it will probably be about one monster (Bulger) and a super corrupt system (the FBI, etc.) that allowed him to continue being monstrous until it was no longer convenient for them. not a whole lotta celebratin' in that scenario, I don't think.
Also, Hollywood has a long tradition of having it both ways,
going at least as far back as the original Scarface (1932), which starts with a tut-tutting voice-over decrying gangsters like Capone (the model for Scarface) as the shame of the nation, before wallowing for most of the movie in his exciting, ruthless, violent exploits, followed by a little coda on his inevitable comeuppance by good guys wielding tommy guns.
It's entertainment. Maybe if I were a higher-minded sort, I'd thrill equally to films about rapacious Wall Street bankers tapping away at their computers to swindle their customers out of millions. Call me crass, but I like the bang-bang stuff better.
That doesn't mean I'm celebrating Whitey Bulger and the dirty cops who abetted him. Clearly they are evil scumbags who richly deserve their punishment, and any Southie old-timers who still think of him as essentially a misunderstood good guy are pig-ignorant and/or delusional. But I still want to see that movie. It's not like Bulger will see a nickel from it, plus I suspect he won't enjoy being portrayed as a brown-toothed, psychopathic rat with really bad breath.

That dead-eyed look is indeed impressively chilling, but I wouldn't be surprised to learn it has prosthetic help.

and I wouldn't be surprised if they tried to make the blue contacts "pop" with a bit of CGI. the effect is extremely unsettling...hope it won't be too distracting in the movie itself.
