Adam Castiglioni reports the developers of the old Filene's building have uncovered the old marker designating the exact center of all creation, right at the corner of Washington and Summer Streets, where it had lain covered up after Filene's went out of business in an era we'd just as soon prefer to forget.

We have Masons here, plenty of Cathedrals, a "Freedom Trail" which might be a trail that proves the Knights Templar were the first Europeans who settled on this continent.

Well I don't know who your "we" is, but I actually lived in and liked that era. I loved the real original Filene's Basement. I still have fabulous couture that I bought there in the sixties and seventies that you would not believe today.
Sorry for being vague
I wasn't referring to the era in which you could actually buy something at both Filene's and the Basement (first winter jacket I ever bought in Boston was from the Basement), but the era in which both closed and just sat there, decaying, at least the parts that hadn't been scooped into a giant, depressing hole.

It hasn't occurred to someone that the big department stores and the ready-made clothes they sold crushed the product-specific mom and pop stores downtown with low prices and endless choices.
One generation's pearl-clutching is another's faux nostalgia.
Suburban malls killed the
Suburban malls killed the downtown department store.
Suburban department stores killed the suburban malls.
Target and Walmart are giant suburban department stores. Call Target Dayton's and Walmart Walton's if you need that feeling of old timey names on retailers.
