Line out the door as curious downtownies check out new supermarket
By adamg on Wed, 04/29/2015 - 4:14pm
Dan O'Brien thought of Disneyworld when he saw the line of people waiting to get into the Downtown Crossing Roche Bros. on its opening day today.
The store is also accessible via the subway stop.

At last!
I'll wait until I'm back from my trip, but I'm pretty psyched this is open.
It's very nice
It's very nice inside. Very well done and laid out. Almost reminded me of a Whole Foods. No confusing layout like some other (*cough* Star Pru *cough*) city grocery stores. It will be even better once they expand into the neighboring space (as said by the BostonGlobe article I read), which I assume is the basement of the new high rise going up.
Good selection of stuff, both grocery items and quick items (fresh stuff). The prices were kinda meh.. But I have to remember I'm a loyal Market Basket shopper so I can't compare price to Roche that way. But the sale items they had were decently priced.
Overall, I'll be back. Excellent spot for a store near work.
Adding 10,000 more square feet, and beer and wine
once the basement of the Franklin Street tower is completed.
No line to get into the store at 11 am
When was this? When I visited this morning, there were lines for some of the outdoor free-sample booths, but all of them moved quickly.
Guess
It might have been for the outdoor free sample booths.
haha
I musta missed ya Ron. I had to run to Markley (inside Macy's) and ran over there around 10:30. It wasn't too terribly busy at that time. By the time I wanted to get lunch around 1230 there was a line so I didn't bother.
But yes at noontime on there was a line that went almost around the corner.
Can you imagine
How much deli meat they had to pre-slice?
Another line outside was for
Another line outside was for free pizza. I went in to check it out, but it was just too crowded, bought a water and split.
Yeah
I saw that when I left work. People were lined up for a half hour plus for a free slice of Mystic brand frozen pizza. I mean...yeah.
It's a supermarket for Petes
It's a supermarket for Petes sake! Sorry I wasnt there I have a real important job.
No doubt!
So important you couldn't even take a lunch break, let alone leave the office on one to check out the new supermarket.
Open until 10 pm
Plenty of time to shop after work.
Consider this
Having a handy supermarket means that you don't have to rush home and then to the store to get peppers or milk or whatever you need to make dinner. Go to store, get on T, go home, cook!
= more time at work
Plus they're open late.
I went in last night and was super impressed. It's definitely a pretty high end market--$27 chunks of Vermont cheese!--but very decent basics, good looking produce, and yes--a really nice layout. The grab-and-go stuff is all upstairs and the more serious groceries below which will help with traffic flow. As much as I miss the basement, I'm thrilled to see something there that will liven up the area.
Was the French Toast Alert on
Was the French Toast Alert on high?
Local jobs
for local people = good for the economy - Good luck Roche Bros!!!
lines
At 5:30 they had a line for free pizza outside, but no line to get in the store. It was crowded inside, but no line to get in. Once I got to the register, the single line they had was pretty long, but it moved quickly. One line + many pay stations = no worry about picking the wrong cashier. I wish more places used this system.
I'm impressed with this Roche Bros. Reasonable prices, great selection, beautiful store. I'm thrilled to have such a nice replacement for Star at the Pru. Today I get to go back to take some pics; my bride didn't want us to get booted on opening day.
