Low chopper rattling residents from Beacon Hill to Chelsea

Helicopter circling Chelsea

Chopper over Chelsea. Photo by Andrew Teman.

A helicopter is flying low and in circles over the area this morning. It could be a federal radiation chopper, or it could be a training exercise by the FBI and State Police.

Teman reports it circled his Chelsea neighborhood three times. In Charlestown, Samantha Hammar reports it was flying lower than the top of the Bunker Hill Monument. On Beacon Hill, Megz McClaff says it was so low, "I thought it was going to land on my roof!"

The National Nuclear Security Administration said it is flying a copter over the area to soak in all those good good background-radiation levels with which to use as baselines should somebody try to sneak in a bomb or something.

You may recall how they did something similar before the Marathon in April.

But the Chelsea Fire Department tweets it's a joint training exercise between the FBI and State Police.

So take your pick.

Between this and the mysterious blackout in Allston sales of tinfoil in MA just shot up 200%.

what exactly is going on? It is, in fact, suspicious behavior, not normal.

Am I also the only person to have noticed unusual activity by low flying helicopters around Boston?Because it does actually go on. I first started to really notice it as far back as 2009, when living in Hyde Park.EVERY early AM (2AM) helicopters would fly very low and circle around my neighborhood. And others have told me they also have witnessed similar activity. Obviously, something is up, tin foil hat or no tin foil hat.

No clue, but wouldn't surprise me in the least if it were just early morning flight training out of Norwood Airport. Even if I don't have my police scanner on, I can usually tell when something big is going on north of Roslindale, because we're right under the flight path of news copters heading from Norwood northward (well, except the other day, when they more or less hovered over our block to get video of that guy's apartment).

First thought that popped into my head when I first noticed them was Norwood Airport; I've seen them following the curve of the Neponset River towards Rt. 1 and Norwood. I don't believe this was the case with the early AM helicopters. I believe they are most likely police, maybe even FBI, possibly even national guard training of some kind.

Others say get the tail #, etc., Well, speaking for myself, that's almost impossible to do from the ground because of lighting, time of day, atmospheric conditions, etc.

Dunno.

furthermore, for the past couple of years, there is a small airplane circling over my area of Brighton, usually for about 1 hour or so between 11pm - 2am, about 2-3 times a week, sometime daily.

It looks to be a small, propeller Cessna type of airplane.
I actually got used to the sound of an airplane's distant humming at night, but i do wonder what it's all about.
Drug enforcement? Electronic surveillance?

All joking aside, where can I get a good deal on a tin-foil hat?

Don't know if it's related, but shortly before 6pm Thursday there was a copter circling over Revere.

After record cold this past week and the record snowiest winter, they may be trying to find evidence for President Obama's Coast Guard Academy "Global Warming" speech.

But thanks for trying.

Except when it suits the narrative for Global Warming Climate Change!

Reality is marching happily along, scientists continue to keep track of it, and neither give a shit what you think.

Why don't you put your money where your mouth is and move to Florida? Or even the New England coast?

And the Duggars are just misunderstood and Bill O'Reilly is the pinnacle of honest journalism. Any other Fox talking points you'd care to share with those who are ignorant of it's ignorance?

Never heard of the Duggars until this week and O'Reilly proved he is merely an actor when he had sportscaster Zip Rzeppa smash an egg on his face on the old channel 7 here in Boston. Roger Ailes and the Fox crowd are far too RINO for my taste. My talking points are my own. Did you turn on your heat this June dvd, or did you tough it out?

You are a fool.

I'm not even sure that you are real - I think The Onion invented you.

Sort of like "Area Retiree Confident That Local Weather Proves Climate Change is a Hoax".

The kid on NECN says the temperature could break 60 today for the first time this month (June 6th). An Inconvenient Truth! Try the bicycle, hopefully a better outcome than John Kerry.

because you'll probably die of old age before you see the results of man made climate change. Ignorance, however, never seems to get old.

If the pause continues, we'll all die of old age or hypothermia, if the sea ice continues its record expansion.

... known as the jet stream are bringing cool air down from Canada in an unusual elongation of their flow patterns.

And yes, that is a climate change element where we got lucky, for now.

You wouldn't have a count of the number of days the temp exceeded 80 in May on the tip of your finger, wouldja? I nearly got heat stroke on the one that happened on May 26th.

Of course not, as it would be inconvenient for yet another bullshit talking point you get to trot out to remind us of your ability to drag your knuckles along the ground as you walk while engaged in strange sucking noises with that mouth breather habit you can't quit.

“When a man uses profanity to support an argument, it indicates that either the man or the argument is weak - probably both”

Knuckledragger? Fishfuck? Mouthbreather? Really gotta love the tolerant, liberal crowd here. Every opinion welcome, as long as it's theirs.

And yes Swirly, I'm for real. There's a few left in Walpole and at least one in the federal pen that wish not. Wishful thinking.

That wasn't Swrily.

A trio of them just buzzed my apartment on Savin Hill. I went outside on the deck to have a look and watched them head downtown and meander their way around the waterfront until I lost sight of them.

Do the background radiation levels change much around here ? They must, cause it seems like they measure them again any time something happens that might make people start to question the way the war on terror is being carried out.

Alan Wright represents Roslindale on the Logan CAC, and he recommends you complain to massport and the FAA. You can get details on who the offending party is from this website ...

https://www.massport.com/environment/environmental-reporting/noise-abate...

You can see details like Tail Number, Owner, Origin, Destination, AC Type, Altitude, Speed.

This copter flight sounds like its WAY WAY outside the normal traffic, reporting and noise abatement standards, so I suspect it wasn't tracked there.

I've listened and seen the ones learning to fly out of Norwood airport for years. Last week was different, later in the morning and not in the same area, were over hp ave, river st, Cleary square area. Not a mediflight or press, traffic copter. Was different and caught your eye and ear. Lower than usual as well.

It flew very low above Joe Moakley Park at 11:45 this morning. I was almost certain it was coming in for a landing when it turned and headed over Dorchester Heights toward the Seaport.

Illusion. I'm sure it was low. Just not that low. .

It seems we used to have copters buzzing everywhere, all the time. Ferrying executives, traffic reporters, etc. Nobody would have batted an eye at copters.

Now they are "intolerable noise", etc.? Strange how high profile crashes stopped rampant chopper use and now they are unusual.

It was that it was a) really low and b) circling over a given area two or three times. That would have been unusual in 1985, too.
