Mayor, Steve Murphy get their wish: Library-trustee chairman resigns
BPL Board Chairman Jeffrey Rudman submitted his resignation today after a meeting with Mayor Walsh.
As with BPL President Amy Ryan, Rudman's resignation takes effect July 3.
Walsh has been critical of the way Ryan has run the library and has called for an audit of library holdings. Murphy issued a press release claiming lots of items have gone missing at the BPL less than an hour before the library announced a worker had found two missing prints misfiled at the Copley Square library. Murphy then postponed a hearing at which he said he would demand answers to where all the allegedly missing items had disappeared to.
In joint statements, Walsh praised Rudman, while Rudman praised fellow board members and Ryan.
Walsh:
I want to thank Jeff Rudman for his service to the Boston Public Library. We are fortunate to be home to one of the country's most renowned library systems and it's important that we maintain the highest standard for the residents of Boston. Using the audit as a guide, I look forward to working with the Library to strengthen our programs and services, especially in the neighborhoods, and the availability and security of our assets.
Rudman:
I’m grateful for the opportunity to have served on the Boston Public Library Board of Trustees, and with such a thoughtful and engaging board, The Boston Public Library has prospered under the leadership of President Amy Ryan and my fellow Trustees. The people of Boston must remember that the Boston Public Library is the greatest library system in the country.
Mayor Menino appointed Rudman to the board of trustees in 2004; he became chairman in 2006.

Way to put a scare into
Way to put a scare into people. At first, I thought the headline said "Mayor Steve Murphy..."
Boston Public Library
Walsh has a problem. I don't know anyone who thinks he's been particularly good a hiring the right talent for the job.
So even if Rudman was part of the problem, and no effort is being made to argue he was, it still leaves the question, does Walsh gets it well enough to hire the right person?
The ignoramuses
The LoC (Library of Congress) is finally getting rid of their fossilized director just about the time Amy Ryan will become available. Wouldn't that be just desserts.
Boston sure is good at shooting itself in the figurative foot when they rid local government of actual hard-working competent agency leaders.
Any great candidate for Head of Boston Public Library?...
Who do participants on this blog think would be a great Library Board Chair?... or Head of Boston Public Library?... or Head of Library of Congress?...
Don Saklad
I think he could do both jobs.
He's got my vote
You can be sure proper procedures would be followed.
Finally!
Hopefully Mahty can get a crony in by July 6th!
Yup
Marty and Steve are probably drafting lists of guys they went to high school with, hoping one of them visited a library once and they can sneak them on the Board.
I mean, who are they supposed to hire, their enemies?
At least he comes out and says it
"I'm hiring my friends." That's pretty clear.
Murphy just wants to hire
Murphy just wants to hire another of his friends (not his enemies, y'know).

THe BPL President has to live
THe BPL President has to live in Boston, and members of the Board have to live in Massachusetts - which is why Dennis Lehane is no longer on the board
