Woman's body found floating in the Charles
By adamg on Fri, 07/17/2015 - 9:29am
A boater spotted a body floating in the Charles around 6:50 a.m. near the Mass. Ave. Bridge, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports:
The body is that of an adult female. Investigators have a tentative identification; procedurally, we will only release that ID if her death is believed to be a result of criminal conduct.
UPDATE: Tentatively identified as a Boston woman in her 30s.

the response was kind of insane
Felt like maybe the marathon bombing watertown thing where every single cop in the area "self deployed" without orders or permission
Drove past the scene around 7:30am (50 minutes past the time of discovery) today and there were 2+ ambulances, 3 fire trucks, 2 MIT police cars, 6 unmarked sedans with law enforcement lights and close to NINE state police vehicles. The chain of parked vehicles stretched for longer than a 1/4 mile and all you saw was uniformed and plainclothes people just gossiping in groups and leaning up against the railings.
We literally could not believe that this was a real law enforcement incident as the response was so jaw-dropping-- in the car ride we decided that it must have been a joint training exercise as we could not figure out any other sensible reason for what we saw
Are you serious?
You do know that standing around shooting the shit while 3 or 4 officers do the work is more important than keeping old ladies from being knocked down at Savin Hill Station, right?
You have a crossing point of
You have a crossing point of multiple jurisdictions and it's a bridge. Also it's a body that was found which could have been a jumper or a homicide and unknown if there was an active assailant, witnesses or multiple causalities. This response is appropriate.
still ...
I'm just an idiot at a keyboard (some EMS training from back in the day) but our impression driving by was that the response was overkill for a live technical water rescue with actual victims in the water. For a recovery operation it was simply silly - especially 50 minutes into it. It was pretty far from any bridge as well. Bodies are recovered in the Charles a few times a year and rarely like this. Almost all of them are discovered by the morning boat crews - I met a guy once who averaged discovering a body on the charles every ~2 years or so.
Anyway it was unusual enough to comment on.
That kind of heavy police response
for a body floating in the Charles, a common enough occurrence, seems unusual to me. Most floaters are suicides or people accidently falling in while intoxicated. Sad. RIP.
You haven't seen many responses to bodies in the river, then
There's always a heavy response from various first responders (police, fire and EMS) to bodies in the Charles (or the Muddy River). For starters, you don't know at first if the person is actually dead. Then how do you extract the body? And somebody has to investigate to make sure it is a suicide (or, if not, to start collecting evidence).
Yeah,
I stand corrected. And questionable jurisdiction is involved too, I suppose. What a morbid, depressing job for the cops, firemen, emts. Sad all around.
