Irresponsible dog owners let pets kill great blue heron in Arnold Arboretum

Oh, yeah, there's a reason you're not supposed to let your dog run wild through the Arboretum. Joe Growhoski reports these fliers about off-leash killers are now posted at the Arboretum: They kill the local wildlife, bite kids and bike riders, trample new plantings and shit all over the place. Stop it, the Arboretum implores.

That's a lot of runaway cats
In my opinion, it's more like:
Unleashed cat roams the neighborhood, kills birds, sometimes brings them back to the house. Rarely runs away.
Unleashed dog poops, It's owner is probably not picking up after it (because if it was a responsible dog owner, it'd pick up after the dog in the first place). Owner should then be required to eat the poop.
House cat poops in a box. Then scratches and paws at the poop, getting kitty litter and particles of its own poop all over its paws. Then gets on every piece of furniture in the house, including owner's bed. Cat shit particles are now in the bed. House smells lovely.
Unleashed dog bit my leashed dog once actually twice. I wanted to maim the dog, then kill its owner, but thought better of it.

According to the Globe, an attack by more than one off-leash dog eviscerated the heron.
Eastie is getting a gated dog park
built and paid for by Massport. It is across from Santarpios, on Bremen Street. I will let Adam know when opening day is.
Off leash, agility course, fountains, benches for people to sit on. It may not be frolicking in a field, but it is a safe way to let dogs be dogs without bothering people or wildlife.

There's the thing
I can gripe and gripe away about irresponsible dog owners, then I visit a properly built dog park and all my negative thoughts go away.
Until I go 2 blocks down the street and see a pile of something on the sidewalk. (And yes, most dog owners are good about that, but a 90% compliance rate still leaves a lot of poop.)

Pet ownership has grown
Interestingly enough, this vast overabundance of dogs is a relatively recent trend. Growing up in the city in the 60s and 70s I saw far less dogs. A LOT less. Now it seems every last person has one (or more). I'd like to see some statistics on this. I know when the census form shows up in the mail there is a question about pets.

If I had my way
I'm a Peters Hill, off leash guy. I realize it's against the rules and will suffer punishment if caught. The reason why I go off leash is so I can play frisbee with the dogs. My dogs have a lot of energy and a stroll just doesn't cut it for them.
I'd propose twice daily off leash hours so everyone can enjoy the park in a way that is good for them.
