Music spread across an entire neighborhood

Klezmer music during Roslindale Porch Fest

Feeling the Klezmer on Washington Street.

Some 45 groups and individual musicians performed across Roslindale today in the first Roslindale Porch Fest.

Mark O'Neill took in several performances:

Chris Dagdigian hosted one of the venues, on Washington Street, posted a number of photos, including:

"We had a blast; hosted chamber music and a musician and both were awesome," he reports.

Whitney Wilson reported all the cool kids were on Metropolitan Avenue:

Patrice Moynihan and her band played jazz on Washington Street in Roslindale Square, sometimes accompanied by a tap dancer.

Kevin Murray enjoyed a set:

On Cliffmont Street, slow tunes:

Music wasn't the only draw. Robert Orthman and family built a parklet outside one venue on Walter Street:

We hosted so we didn't see much except our acts and the one act that played across the road. Hopefully they do this again next year (and no conflict with JP Music Fest!) - it was great all around.

Nice job rozzie! I had a great time, although the topology of the neighborhood is not quite as good as jp for an event like this..the stages were too far apart and not all active during each time slot, so walking around and seeing performances spontaneously without a plan isn't as feasible as it is on jp. Also adams square was very dead in the thick of it so it felt somewhat decentralized. But the experience was baller nonetheless.

As a side note I got to 100 Belgrade during the third slot to see Box of Records, only to find out the police had shut that porch down due to neighbors complaining about the noise. Apparently they had no idea their neighborhood was to be a venue today and the cops sympathized with their uninformedness. Presumably the cops knew about porch fest but I was not around for the bust. Pretty surprised some people didn't know about it but the various promotions were probably mostly electronic.

I wondered if someone would call the police. We have a lot of noise complainers (or just one with various city agencies on speed dial?) on my street in Rozzie.

I live across the street from 100 Belgrade and UH was pretty much the only place I'd heard about the event. Their sound system was REALLY loud, too - I personally didn't mind because that kind of music is my jam but if you weren't aware it could have been pretty disruptive. My upstairs neighbor works nights so I doubt he appreciated it.

Still though, they definitely played from 3ish to 5ish so not a total bust.
