I have to admit if I caught the ball I would respectfully decide to sell it and make a call to Phil Castinetti. That may be selling out, but Phil would certainly take good care of it and I would make a buck.

Very glad Orsillo got to announce the 500th HR.

I've been at Fenway for at least a couple of his hugest, most clutch hits (2004 ALCS games 4 and 5, for instance), but I had my doubts about him earlier this year, thought he might be done. Lord knows that Sox management is still not immune to signing past-their-prime sluggers to big, misbegotten contracts, e.g., Hanley "Jack Clark II" Ramirez. Grateful that Ortiz still has some titanic swings left in him: he's been an indelible part of the franchise since his unlikely signing (released by the Twins!) all those years ago. That giant, sweet personality hasn't hurt. Kudos, big man.

I don't care if never gets another hit. As far as I'm concerned, he's earned a lifetime pass to play here as long as likes.

Although he is still on the roster and has reduced his own salary to $10 per year, The Great Papi hasn't seen much playing time in the past few years. Kept in the dugout by a combination of nostalgia, gratitude, and his magical ability to boost morale, the slugger remains an important part of the Red Sox lineup.

But, as we saw this evening with bases loaded and a championship on the line, Papi is still good for a clutch home run.

"The Great Papi hasn't seen much playing time in the past few years"???

He's going to have over 600 plate appearances this year, as he has in 6 of the previous 7 (in 2012 he had some injuries, but still managed to hit .318 in 90 games) and 8 of the previous 10. He will lead the team in HR and RBI this year again, as he did in both of the last two.

Most of the games he does sit out are inter-league away games, meaning no DH. They often will give him the day off against lefties in NL parks, but when he is called upon to play the field, he does a pretty damn good job if you ask me.

'' reduced his own salary to $10 per year, '' ?????????????

''David Ortiz signed a 1 year / $16,000,000 contract with the Boston Red Sox, including an annual average salary of $16,000,000. In 2015, Ortiz will earn a base salary of $16,000,000. Ortiz has a cap hit of $16,000,000.''

Sorry, Swirrly, my bad.

though Swirly missed that there is a minimum salary as part of the CBA. Even if you're the worst player in the league you're entitled to a cool $490K.

(That was kind of the issue that tipped me off about it being a fake story)

Come October 2035, he'll be a month shy of sixty years old.

And, yes, I could just see him doing this - winning the 2035 World Series with a walk-off. Because Papi.

(good point, Steeve)
