Braintree Line grinds to a halt; track problems are at fault

Kicked off the Red Line at Broadway

As David Finnerty shows us at Broadway, people were told to exit their Red Line trains, since they could no longer run due to some sort of track issue at JFK/UMass.

The T is now sending Braintree trains to Ashmont, where shuttle buses are supposed to take riders to North Quincy.

Between track problems, switching issues, failed signals, power failures, and equipment breakdowns on the Red Line, combined with the MBTA's inability to recover from their chronic, 'unexpected' belly flops, it's a miracle we ever arrive at work or home.

So much for the winter resiliency project ... we haven't got a prayer, given breakdowns on the most benign of days.

Spanning a riding history of 20+ years, I would consider it a remarkable event were we ever to roll into town without speed restrictions. Will anyone in a position of power ever call this for what it is - a significant drag on the region's economy? The T sure doesn't care about we schlubs who ride it.

T just tweeted severe red line delays bc of signal problems at Park Street.

The T is a three ring circus, the buses can't get out of JFK station, Riders are ready to riot at Ashmont and no one is at North Quincy to assist stranded passengers.
Customer service is a joke at the MBTA. Unfortunately the rich and powerful could care less how the poor and powerless get home.

- Damn you, Old Man Winter!!
- What the shit? They've been bustituting the braintree line every weekend since what, July?, to do track work? And now the track's not working?
- Godspeed, commuters.
- Goddamn I love my car.

People were waiting for quite a while for one to arrive at Harvard. And when one did arrive it was an old beat up one. Did they divert 77s to bus people at Broadway?

The garage that runs the 77 still has a supply, shrinking all the time thank goodness, of the old, beat-up ones. They still need to use them in regular service every day. Especially since both the 72 and the 73, which would normally use trackless trolleys, are still running on diesel buses out of that garage due to various construction projects that have interfered with the overhead wires.

So, no, seeing an old beat-up bus on the 77 doesn't mean anything unusual is happening. That said, they could have pulled one to go help with the shuttling. But probably not - that's a long distance to go, they'd pull from routes out of the south side garages first.

Remember that time Boston thought it could handle the Olympics? Boston can barely handle being an overpriced dorm!

You mean when Boston was ready to go on a spending spree that included making sure the transit system was in tip top shape?

Yeah, I remember that. But sure, without a deadline, things will get fixed.

Thankfully cooler minds prevailed and realized Boston cannot be trusted to do that. Probably saved what's left of this city's reputation, all things told.

Every city that has hosted the Olympics went through the same thing. In the end, we would have had a top flight transit system and a shitload of debt.

The issue was never if we could do it, but whether it was worth the money. In the end, the feeling was that it wasn't worth the money.

... until building is complete on the 2000 plus condo and apartment units currently in progress or proposed in Quincy if the system can't handle the current amount of passengers on a perfectly beautiful fall day after weeks of repairs.

This is exactly why I ran for my life last year out of Quincy and into Boston proper.

Think there is too much water in the soup now, wait til southcoast rail and the Green Line extension need attention, and the North-South rail link , and still South Station rework with the USPS, and Widett Circle as a marshalling yard need, ect. ect.
