Boston Police report they managed to nab a Roxbury man dressed as a cop just as he was about to rape a woman in a school yard early this morning and that they think he also attacked a second woman in Egleston Square - who fled before actual police officers could get to her.
Royal Smith, 23, of Roxbury, is charged with armed robbery, attempted kidnapping, attempted sexual assault and impersonating a police officer.
Police say that around 1:10 this morning, a man driving by the Walnut Park apartments in Egleston Square noticed a woman standing there, crying. He stopped to help her and she told him he'd been raped by a cop. He called police, but before they got there, the woman fled. About 20 minutes later, officers looking for the attacker in that case spotted a man and a woman in a darkened part of the George Lewis Middle School at Crawford and Waumbeck streets:
Officers approached the individuals and asked the male why he was in a dark park. At that time, the male informed the officers that he was in possession of a BB gun. Officers then retrieved the BB gun and detained the suspect. As officers handcuffed the suspect, a grey-colored police scanner fell from his pocket.
Officers then spoke with the female, who stated she was en route to visit her boyfriend who lived nearby. She then stated that the suspect approached her and identified himself as a police officer. She then stated that the suspect pulled the gun from his waist, pointed it at her and took cash from her pocket. Victim further stated that the suspect then made a sexually suggestive threat. She also said that is when police arrived.

Is this something that is on the rise? If so, does it have to do with the resurgence of the "never question police or else" society?

Probably related to the society of people who make excuses for serial rapists who are friends of theirs.

I've never made an excuse for a rapist.
If you are talking about Marzilli, well, I was correct that he was indeed nuts. He didn't rape anybody, either, that we know of. In any case, his insanity is not an excuse - it's an explanation and (possibly) a legal defense if he is found to have been incapable of behaving himself while acutely ill. It also doesn't and shouldn't mean roaming free, either - jail may be inappropriate, but the nut hatch is necessary and required.
As for cops and "cops", I was always taught that if a cop wasn't acting like a "cop", get the hell away. The state troopers even told us this when I was in high school - e.g. they reviewed standard traffic stop policy and how the cop should behave if they are a real cop. I'm just glad that I don't have a daughter, given the way these guys seem to make it up as they go along these days - what would I tell her?

What you do with your cornflakes is your own problem, Gareth.
