Bunker Hill Lager in old Boston

The folks at the Boston City Archives wonder if you can tell when and where this photo was taken. See it larger.

The railroad tracks are the hint... My guess is Mass Ave, late 1890s

OR somewhere along where the pike runs thru the south end now (since the rails existed long before the pike)

If only we could return to this quantity of public transit.

I actually meant the railroad tracks going under the road.. not the trolley tracks :)

PS - I do too. I'd love to take a trolley from Nashua NH to Hyannis.

Looking northerly on Washington Street from Castle Street switch tower
Title: Looking northerly on Washington Street from Castle Street switch tower
Creator: Boston Transit Commission
Date: 1904 May 7

It looks like Castle Street was obliterated with the New York streets urban renewal, but looks to be where Herald Street is now. The bridge in the foreground is over the tracks.

Here's roughly the same view.

If this photo was taken in 1904, where is the Washington Street Elevated (Orange Line) which opened in 1901?

Behind you.

The Washington Street tunnel had not yet opened and trains exited the Pleasant Street portal of the Tremont Street subway and met the elevated on Castle Street.

Don't want to spoil the fun, but Bunker Hill Brewery comes back to 40 Alford Street, Charlestown, Massachusetts, where the T Maintenance shops et al are banked by the mighty soon to be casinoed Mystic River . IMAGE(https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5500/14449013165_210bf438d4_o.jpg)

For a moment, I thought Bunker Hill Lager was brewed at the hardware store mentioned on the billboard in the photo.

Washington Street (facing towards Forest Hills) @ Green Street in Jamaica Plain?

h.h. green hardware store which the sign in the upper right hand corner of the photo says is across the street (with a finger pointed that way) and which is partially cut off on the left of the photo was located near by columbia theater at 978 Washington Street, about the intersection of todays washington and herald streets

H.H. Green Hardware is listed in the public records as 941 Washington St - as previously stated in the posts below as Washington and Marginal Street

More important, when are we going to have a revival of old Boston beer companies? I'd drink Bunker Hill Lager!

You'd sway from the Mystic Brewery?!?? *gasp* *clutches pearls*

Mystic is my second beer love, Sam Adams and Shock Top came around first for me!

I've always rather enjoyed local beers though, they are more willing to mess with flavor.

Best poster ever, showing the idyllic meadows of Roxbury with Fort Hill in the background and the train! http://static1.1.sqspcdn.com/static/f/14305/5848400/1266764608143/highla...

... in Maine anymore. It seems to have given up the ghost (for good?) around 4 years ago.

They brewed in an old building on Terminal street , after the sugar piers , by the cement silos. The last time I was down in that neck of the woods...

I loved Tremont Ale so much. It was my Local Brew of choice for many years, though I'm quite happy with the craft beer choices now. Still, nice to be reminded.
