Perhaps it was more of a statement than a hate crime - the taping represents black professors lack of voice, being marginalized or crossed off. Just saying - i am sure there is a race problem at Harvard just as it exists throughout our society.. It is hard to get over but acknowledgement is the first step
and the message can be interpreted or mistaken in a way than your original intent then you might want to rethink your method of delivery.
I don't think x'ing out the faces of black professors with black duck tape is a good way to tell the world that you, personally or in a group, are "being marginalized". Thus, it most likely is/was a hate crime.
Hope they have surveillance video. This is probably the fifth time in the past year that those faculty photos have been defaced. The previous instances had messaging that would generally be associated with the BLM movement.
a quick google found this other episode last December which certainly seems like it was done by someone with a pro-BLM agenda. But I can't find anything about other similar events.
At first blush this latest incident certainly seems like a racist jab, but honestly I could see it being another, less obvious followup by whoever did the earlier incident, or even a provocation by a third party with who-knows-what-agenda. Without more evidence, its kind of impossible to tell.
Fwiw, if the persons who did this didn't wear gloves, then there may be some lovely fingerprints on the glass and the sticky underside of the tape.
given the non-destructive use of black electrical tape. Painter's tape would have been even more thoughtful with no residue, but only comes in white, blue, and brown.
[edit: I remembered that gaffer's tape comes in black and leaves no residue. Another image I saw of the "vandalism" looked like it could have been gaffer's tape.]
If posters saying "We will not be marginalized!" were placed over the faces of the black professors, than I might cede to your statement. In this case, I think it was, as you say, a "racist jab."
Pray tell, how is it a fair point when you have an instance of blatant racism (i.e. hate crime cited by the Harvard U Police) being compared to the Elizabeth Warren's Native American ancestry dribble. No, no fair point seen here.
Lord, why did I even bother to click on the comments like to this post? All I've found is an Mariana Trench level of drivel and dross from various and sundry racist (or at least racist apologists).
Harvard is divided by the two communities the left bank and the right bank with the charles river down the middle. It will be interesting to see which one s responsible for defacing the hallowed halls of Harvard.
The connection is that people who are passionate about a cause will sometimes go to great lengths to generate sympathy for their cause (or antipathy towards their supposed adversry), even if it involves a crime. * I have no idea what motivated the guy at Delta College, but it reminded me of the Romney/Obama thing below.
Here's an example of a Romney staffer trying to cause trouble.
I've also been involved in, and read about, numerous international situations (i.e, UN peace-keeping missions) where one side inflicts harm on their own members, for the purpoe of generating blame towards the other side.
I have no idea if that's what happened at Harvard, but I'd say it's just about as likely as some white student putting tape over the professors' faces. And most important, we should all be careful to start judging what happened or who's to blame until some facts come in.
Am I a horrible person if the first thing I thought was, "I feel sorry for the administrator or janitor who is going to have to spend their whole afternoon trying to get tape gunk off of glass?"

My first thought was BLM
Wouldn't be the first time a student did something offensive in order to act offended and bring attention to their "movement."
more than once?

Yeah, seems more to get attention for BLM protest agenda

Using the same amount of
Using the same amount of evidence as you have, I'm pretty sure you did it.
Definitely more than once.
Definitely more than once. Not everything that happens makes the news.
Then could you describe your source?
Are you a HLS student/faculty/staff?
The BLM example you cite was of a different ilk.

I hope they have video, just
I hope they have video, just so the speculation ends.
Just black professors or all professors of color at Harvard Law?
Was Native American Professor, Sen. Elizabeth Warren's picture defaced or just other professors of color?
Can you throw in some more
Can you throw in some more garbage talking points? You didn't get me BINGO yet.
They have BINGO?
They have BINGO at the casinos now?
What is scary is that 12, so far, people liked O-Fish's comment.

I don't agree with everything
I don't agree with everything Fish says, but he has a point. She self reports as a Native American so it's a fair point.
Fish's point is not pertinent
Fish's point is not pertinent, so it's hardly fair and it's dumb to bring up now.
It's an amusing non-sequitur
on a fairly serious thread. People were amused.
I wish we (me included) didn't have to be so damn self righteous all the time.
Really?
So you are rocketing backward at 0.5c rather than 0.6c
Oh, do tell.

Holy mixed metaphors Batman!

There's only one metaphor in
There's only one metaphor in there. You're mistaking the colorful descriptives used afterwords. That is not metaphor or even simile.
Pretty sure there are no
Pretty sure there are no literal base metals in those posts, so at least 2 metaphors. That's enough for a mix.
Dross's definition as rubbish
Dross's definition as rubbish in general is long established. You have a point, but it's not the only way to look at it.

Threats at a Michigan college
Its worth reading this story carefully before deciding if Harvard was a hate crime

Whats the connection?
That newsblit was so short on details that it's impossible to determine the relative seriousness of the two episodes.
It's also unclear to me how closely online trolling corresponds to physical vandalism?

Tape
Am I a horrible person if the first thing I thought was, "I feel sorry for the administrator or janitor who is going to have to spend their whole afternoon trying to get tape gunk off of glass?"
Easy with the right tools
Goo-gone or the like. Kerosene is much cheaper, though lacks the citrus oil additive.
