If posters saying "We will not be marginalized!" were placed over the faces of the black professors, than I might cede to your statement. In this case, I think it was, as you say, a "racist jab."

There's only one metaphor in there. You're mistaking the colorful descriptives used afterwords. That is not metaphor or even simile.

The connection is that people who are passionate about a cause will sometimes go to great lengths to generate sympathy for their cause (or antipathy towards their supposed adversry), even if it involves a crime. * I have no idea what motivated the guy at Delta College, but it reminded me of the Romney/Obama thing below.

I've also been involved in, and read about, numerous international situations (i.e, UN peace-keeping missions) where one side inflicts harm on their own members, for the purpoe of generating blame towards the other side.

I have no idea if that's what happened at Harvard, but I'd say it's just about as likely as some white student putting tape over the professors' faces. And most important, we should all be careful to start judging what happened or who's to blame until some facts come in.
