South Boston Foodies fans will have to keep making two stops if they want some beer or wine
By adamg on Fri, 12/11/2015 - 3:30pm
The Boston Licensing Board yesterday rejected a request from Foodies, 230 Broadway, for a license to sell beer and wine.
The proposed license had been opposed by Al's Liquors - which had put out a protest sandwich board a few doors down.
In addition to Al's, Foodies customers can stock up on "curated craft beers and spirits" at Social Wines across from Amrheins.

That
Is so lame. What is wrong with this town?
Laughable...
I always find it funny when Mass. residents try to compare Boston to LA, Chicago, DC or NYC.
This city has a long way to go to be in the elite class of American cities.
The good news is the city is changing fast....
Your act is getting tired

Changing?
This looks like every other ugly ass condo development built in the last 20 years.
actually it is not a few doors down
it is next door.
Isn't there a road between them?
I know, minor thing, but "across the street" makes it sound like it's on the other side of Broadway.
Both stores are located at C
Both stores are located at C and Broadway.
Dumb, but could be worse
In Pennsylvania,
Count your blessings, Massachusetts.
i dont think
you need to go as far as pennsylvania for that
edit: part of it, anyway.
Do burger places get to
Do burger places get to petition Boston (and does Boston listen) if they do want competition? How about gas stations?
Don't know about gas stations
But food-serving licenses all require public hearings before the licensing board (and if they want to sell take-out, hearings before the Zoning Board of Appeals), so, yes, a Burger King franchisee could appear before the board to oppose a proposed McDonald's across the street.
I don't want competition
Shameful that somebody can protest a license application on this basis.
Well that and they had
Well that and they had promised not to do so as a condition of their initial building permit being approved
Foodies
I do patronize Foodies. My understanding is that they made statements when they were opening that they would not sell alcohol.
Experience around here has shown me that in many cases statements like this are made and after a given amount of time there will be a push for a later closing, an expansion of the premises, a license to sell/serve alcohol where there wasn't one, etc.
We have plenty of options around here in this regard.
Fire away all South Boston detractors.
Have a great weekend all!
Options
Sure there are options, but who wants to deal with two unpleasant, disgruntled people at checkout when you should be able to do it all in one stop!
I like Foodies. I'm in there
I like Foodies. I'm in there at least twice a week. But they're so small they barely have enough room to stock milk and bread. I don't see how they think they have room for beer and wine.
You're kidding, right? Have
You're kidding, right? Have you been to Dave's in Davis Square? Or City Feed in JP? They are by no means the smallest grocery store in the city that would be selling alcohol. Trust me: If there is a will, they will find a way.
Good
A.) They are too small for this anyway
B.) They said, as part of approval to initially build, that they would not try to get a liquor license. There is nothing wrong with holding someone to their word.
Curated beer and spirits
Ha!
Honoring Promises
When Foodies opened they promised they would not seek a beer & wine license in order to win support. So community support of their opening was based on their not selling beer and wine which is available directly across C St. They should be held to their word. Plain and simple.
If potential business owners and developers who want to open/build in South Boston can not be held to their word then what's the point of community meetings and agreements?
Don't agree
Foodies should be able to sell some craft beer and wine. Yes, Social Wines is down the street and Al's is next door but its nice to get everything all at once. Also Al's does not have a great selection for nice wines, they just have mass produced crap. I don't think it would be much competition for Al's, if they carried items that were different. There is so much good wine/beer out there and not every store has the same selection.
