Grand Prix no Olympics: Organizers agree to pick up all costs of racing cars around the waterfront

City and state officials today signed a letter of intent with Grand Prix Boston that gets a yearly car race through the streets around the South Boston Convention Center closer to the starting line.
Under the proposal, the private organizers would assume responsibility for all costs associated with the race and agree to return the streets they use to pre-race conditions when they're done.
The first race is scheduled for Labor Day weekend, 2016.

What? So those that live near the Seaport have to go on vacation the week of the race because somebody told the City that the race was a good thing. Will they pay me to go to Bora Bora for the week?

I choose to. I usually go visit friends in Cambridge all day.

You're equating you going to Cambridge for a few hours on St. Patrick's day to someone living on the raceway going away for a week?
Speaking of the Olympics....
It turns out that the Tokyo Olympics is likely to cost 6 (yes, six) times the official projection (made at the time the bid was won). In other words, around $15 billion rather than $2.5 billion. Yet more proof that we dodged an Olympic-sized bullet.

I mean... Labor Day weekend is traditionally so insane with folks on the roads moving into Boston... many of whom have absolutely no idea where they are. I can't imagine anyone thinks it's a good idea to throw a few hundred Grand Prix cars into the mix complete with incomprehensible road closures.
Totally a fun idea for EARLY August when the city is really empty.. but Labor Day weekend? Really?

Hats off to the organizers for stepping up to the plate. If they are good to their word I hope that locals will support the event by attending.

With all the country music that pops up at Sox games these days, I guess it was inevitable that south boston would go full on redneck and start hosting car races. Next up tractor pulls and demolition derbys. Its a little bit of New Hamphire right near downtown.
