A roving UHub photographer couldn't help but stop to marvel at the backbreaking work that obviously went into clearing this space on East Broadway in South Boston tonight.

...it's safe to say you haven't made it yet.
There are plenty of spaces available for rent in all these new fancy condo buildings and private lots. rent one and be a grown up.

I know, I know, you've got plenty to say about the ways that your Southie (I'm sorry, SOBO) neighbors fail to measure up to your high standards -- but consider, not everyone has your (obviously deserved and purely the product of merit) income. I suggest you learn more approachable ways to condescend to your inferiors; right now, the adoring hordes are doubtless only refraining from worshiping at your feet out of fear that their adulation would not be well received. Show them that despite your innate superiority, you're really a nice guy (as long as they stay in their place), and you'll get the adulation you so obviously crave.

we are all equal. i am no one special. i just made some decisions in life that didn't require anything more than some common sense.
for example, not being an angry, closed minded person that hates any kind of change.

I think it'd be funny if someone went and put one of these over the cone:

Aren't there micro deckahs where all of the alleys use to be? Just return them to NStar, or whatever company name is on them.
That's a great idea...

I walk by, toss the cone. You park there, and whoever put the cone down comes home and keys your car.
No one is keying your car over that

They didn't shovel anything. They probably put it out there hoping that everyone would have no balls like you and just leave it there. What did they have to lose, a cone they stole from someone else last winter?
Sure they are

If they weren't trying to save a spot, they wouldn't have put the cone down.

Just like your comment addressed what I originally said?
Yes, obviously someone was trying to “save†a spot (assuming this wasn’t staged for the sake of causing some outrage, because no one saves spots on broadway due to snow). But people put cones out all the time when it’s not warrant hoping that nobody will move it because they’re scared. My point is in these instances no one is keying any cars, because they didn’t waste any effort to shovel it. I live in Southie and take great pleasure in removing any space saver I see if not within the Menino sanctioned 48 hours after a snow emergency (last winter being an exception for obvious reasons).
That is silly but in a city

That is silly but in a city where your tax dollars are used to provide parking for a privileged few this type of thing can almost be justified. Neighborhood parking signs and stickers are just legalized space saving. Those spaces should be open to all city residents.
Interesting definition

How do you figure that the residents of a neighborhood are a "privileged few"?

I agree, parking permits should cost money. 20$ for the first one and an additional 15% with each extra.

...started last year in the Cleveland Circle area where I've lived for over twenty years. Saving a space was always the curse of places like Southie and Dorchester and I would laugh at the selfish denizens who lived in those neighborhoods. Last year, broken chairs, laundry baskets and stolen orange cones littered my neighborhood as well. I had always thought, well, the people south of me seemed to have more of a right to the space if they've had a family home there for years but the transient students in my neighborhood seemed to think they could claim a space for the entire weekend when they decide to go skiing or bring laundry home to mommy or wherever they went. Who knows if they even shoveled out the space? Anyone can reserve any space they can fit their car into. The city needs to shut down this practice.

Guessing not
By lbb
Wed, 12/30/2015 - 8:49am
I'm guessing not.
1. It's night. Yeah, wakes are held at night sometimes, but...
2. They didn't do a very good job (or any job) of clearing it. Funeral home people usually go to considerable lengths to make sure that things run smoothly for the bereaved people.
3. There's only one spot marked. Sure, maybe the others were taken, but..
4. When funeral homes and churches put out markers, they put them on the curb or sidewalk, never in the street. They do this because, unlike those who use so-called space savers, they recognize that they do not have any right to prevent anyone from parking on a public street; they're merely asking as a courtesy.
tl;dr: it's just another greedy entitled lazy pig.

When I still lived in Somerville, I fantasized about taking all the space-savers and just switching them around the block. Sure, you can save a spot with your old lawn furniture-- but you'll have to find it! Now here's a free sawhorse instead.

Now that would qualify as an art installation. Make large-scale plastic ones with weighted bases and deploy them randomly in a parking entitlement wars neighborhood.

Move the Cone
By Comment

Someone ought to move the cone and leave it in a garbage can. This type of thing doesnt go on in the nicer neighborhoods. In Back Bay and Beacon Hill if someone sees a cone they move the cone
