It's President Wu now; pledges progressive agenda for council

The city council has unanimously elected Councilor Michelle Wu (at large) as City Council President. Councilor Matt O'Malley (Jamaica Plain, West Roxbury) withdrew his name last night. Her election comes two years after she threw her support behind Bill Linehan's bid to remain council president.
Her elevation means she gets to pick chairpeople of council committees. And she'd become mayor if something happened to Marty Walsh.
In her opening speech, Wu pointed to a progressive agenda at a time of "historic inequality" across the country and in Boston.
For all the neighborhoods with gleaming new towers, too many parts of the city face "skyrocketing housing costs, nightly gunshots devastating opioid addiction" and stagnant wages, with residents who worry their children will be worse off than they are, she said.
She also pledged a more open council, starting with a more "transparent" Web site and a requirement that committee chairs hold "town meetings" in different neighborhoods.
Among those in attendance: US Sen. Elizabeth Warren, who praised councilors in general for their service and in particular Wu, whom she called "a woman who gets up and does the hard work that needs to be done to make a difference."

Pretty clear linkage:
Theszak may be a bit hyperfocussed on the topic of open government, but in this case he's making a good point - Boston's City Council (and Mayor's Office) have a deservedly horrid reputation when it comes to transparency.
Wu is talking the talk, we'll see if she walks the walk. So far, her performance as an effective progressive has been a bit spotty.

My point exactly. The hyperfocus of Theszak's comment is what was head scratching to me. Transparency and good information management go hand in hand, but some context would be helpful The thrust of the post was about Wu's election, not building a transparent site. Just my $.02.

Overblown
SLIS absolutely has some areas where it's lacking, but on the whole it's a very strong program.
As for tuition, SLIS is approximately 10% more expensive for an education. SLIS costs $1188 per credit hour with a minimum of 36 credit hours required to graduate vs. SUNY A which costs $925 per credit hour (for out of state tuition) with a minimum of 42 credit hours required to graduate. Granted, for a NY resident, it's markedly less expensive.
Not having attended SUNY Albany (or knowing anyone who went there), I can't speak to the program's strength, but if you look at SLIS' reputation within the community, I don't think it's fair to characterize it as deficient or Albany as superior.
For those who give credence to rankings, SLIS is ranked #9 vs. SUNY A at #31. It is #1 in the nation for Archives and #3 for Children/Youth services, compared to SUNY A which isn't ranked.
As far as distinguished alum, I can't name any SUNY A off the top of my head, but the Archivist of the United States (a position appointed by the President) and the most recent head of the Bodleian Library at Oxford.
What can I say, I've got SLIS pride...

Somehow i find it difficult to imagine Bostonian's voting in an out-of-towner as Mayor, particularity a progressive Harvard elitist. Don't get me wrong, Boston is a very blue city but your average voter isnt as progressive as she is.
Not to mention council elections and mayoral elections are two very different things.

Oh well, if Marty screws this place up too badly or fails to sort out the looming financial problems, I'll just move elsewhere and the parochialists can foot the bill for the lack of leadership in the city by one of their own.
Then again....
Lots of new people living in all those expensive units being built. Voters may change....
