When does she
announce the first school closing? Before or after the new Charter School announcement?
Well
...there are fewer kids than there were 10 years ago yet we spend hundreds of millions more, so why not?
There may be fewer children
There may be fewer children in BPS but the demand is still there. Lots of parents don't want to deal with the lottery or do not get their choices, so they opt out of BPS and go to private. Or those parents move out of the city. You could open more schools in many neighborhoods and easily fill the seats.
Unaffordable
Based on BPS own numbers, we really can't afford to have any more kids attend BPS. If those 20K eligible but unenrolled kids were suddenly part of BPS, there would be a real funding crisis.
I don't buy there's a change in demand really. Parents have been moving out of the city when their kids turn four for decades at this point, or going private. So sure, you could build a k-8 in West Roxbury and fill it tomorrow but that's been true for a long, long time.
I'm not sure -- I would bet
I'm not sure -- I would bet the kids whose parents live in Boston but are spending the funds to send them to private or who have parents stable and well employed enough to have means to buy suburban housing aren't the same kids costing the system 45k / head in behavioral / English language learning / SPED issues, which is why the average cost / pupil is so high (in terms of the money actually going to schools instead of the bloated admin, which is the REAL cost)
I'll take that bet
You're probably right that it would cost less to educate those kids on top of the current BPS population, but the fundamentals of having that many more teachers, staff, etc... would still be overwhelming.
If you round off the numbers, we spend $1b to educate 50k kids, or $20000 per kid. Let's say these opt out kids were such angels, that we could educate them for 1/2 of the current kids - $10000. You'd still need $200m more in the school budget for those 20k kids.
I don't think we have that kind of money kicking around the city coffers at this point considering there would be no additional funding available because after all, everyone pays for the schools already regardless of whether their kids attend them.
Would you rather have your
Would you rather have your tax dollars pay for empty seats in a district school?
